SU CASA Belize
SU CASA (Central America Service Adventure) Belize is a ten-day service-learning trip. In coordination with the SU CASA service-learning and mission trip, SU CASA Belize is a service-learning trip focusing on providing medical care to the many impoverished villages of Belize.
Education:
Each year eight students from a wide range of majors and backgrounds accompany Susquehanna medical staff on the service-learning trip. Before embarking, the students are required to participate in several classes aimed to educate the students on Belizean history and culture. In addition, mandatory meetings with the traveling physician brief the students on the procedures of the medical clinics as well as tropical medicine. Once in Belize, the education continues with additional classes focusing on Belizean healthcare and culture.
Service and Experience:
The trip includes approximately five days of medical clinics located in villages throughout the Belizean mainland. During these clinics, students will be asked to participate in triaging patients upon their arrival, as well as observing and assisting during examinations. Students will also rotate through positions of helping distribute prescribed pharmaceuticals and watching over the many child patients. In addition, students will also be asked to keep a record of patients seen, ailments and treatments for the Belizean Ministry of Health.
The last half of the trip will include a visit to the islands of Belize. In the past the teams have stayed on the island of Caye Caulker where they participated in a house call medical clinic with a doctor from the island.
Other Educational Opportunities:
In addition to the multiple medical clinics and classes, SU CASA Belize offers a variety of non-traditional educational venues, some of which include:
- An optional day of service with a local environmental agency
- A visit to the Belize City Hospital
- A visit to the Belmopan City Hospital
