  • A Word from Sean Capkin '06

I am going to be honest with you. As much as I love being a part of the APAN program, it was the farthest thing from my mind for most of the summer. I worked days cavorting with 7-13 year olds as a camp counselor at a Township park, and spent nights directing patrons to their seats as an usher at the Mann Music Center in Philadelphia. In between, I spent a lot of time driving to and from the Jersey Shore, hanging out with my brothers, and taking on all comers in bowling and miniature golf. Needless to say, the fall college fair schedule and worrying about the number of missing table banners were not occupying much of my time.

Near the end of July, I was taken by surprise by an unexpected e-mail I received from Chris Markle '84, Director of Admissions. The e-mail was short but important. Chris had received a note from an attendee at the ACT Enrollment Planners Conference in Chicago, IL, a national admissions conference, congratulating the APAN program for all of its hard work and wonderful achievements. The fact that APAN was cited is an example of an excellent program that utilizes alumni and parent volunteers to recruit prospective students.

This is a true testament to all of the tireless and selfless efforts everyone associated with the program has put in to help the program grow and expand over the last two years. While it is a group effort, three people especially deserve huge thanks: David Weisbord, Chris Markle, and Pam Aungst. Dave is continually searching for new ways to improve the program and attract prospective students, and it is under his direction and Chris’ guidance that the program has really taken off. Pam is the glue that holds the program together—from sending college fair mailings to getting in touch with individual APAN members—she does everything that the rest of us cannot (or forget)!

Worrying about the college fair schedule and hunting down those elusive table banners are now occupying much of my time, while the fun of summer is about the farthest thing from my mind. It is time to get down to work, and I know that all of you are ready as well. I am excited for what promises to be another successful and eventful year with the APAN program, and I look forward to working with you all again this year!

    -Sean

Highlights of the Class of 2007

Thanks in large part to the wonderful job that APAN did over the last year, the Class of 2007 has helped SU reach a record enrollment for the ninth year in a row. The incoming freshman class of 500 freshman students, 30 transfer students, and 3 foreign exchange students brings the total full-time enrollment to 1,880 students, bettering last year’s enrollment of 1,865.

The Class of ’07 has the second highest average SAT score in SU’s history, including 29 students who were either valedictorians or salutatorians of their high school classes, and almost 90% of this year’s freshman rank in the top two-fifths of their high school class. Additionally, 10% of the Class of ’07 is part of an ethnic minority group, the top-mark for diversity in a class at SU.

Much of the success of enrolling the Class of ’07 can be attributed to the amount of time and energy invested by APAN members at college fairs, speaking with students in person and on the phone, and writing students letters and e-mails. Thank you for all your efforts, and let’s continue to do great things over the upcoming year! Remember, the Class of ’08 will be whatever we make it!

APAN Member & SU Outstanding Performer of the Month

The APAN member & SU Outstanding Performer of the Month sections will return in the October issue of The Pipeline.

    Homecoming Weekend 2003: September 19-21

Alumni from all classes returned to SU for an exciting weekend filled with friends, fun, and football. SU had many activities planned to ensure that the weekend was memorable for all. Things kicked off on Friday afternoon with a huge All-Student Homecoming Picnic, followed by the annual Greek Parade down University Avenue, with the evening finished up with a Pep Rally in O.W. Houts Gymnasium.

Saturday began with a Homecoming Parade in downtown Selinsgrove, and was filled with exciting home sporting events: Women’s Tennis vs. Moravian (Moravian 5 SU 4), Women’s Volleyball vs. Wilkes (SU 3 Wilkes 0), and the football team improved their record to 2-1 with a 26-14 win over Moravian.

The football game was followed with the much-anticipated Banana Split Celebration on Pine Street, where all members of the SU and Selinsgrove community were invited to recreate Selinsgrove’s world record setting 4.55 mile banana split. Two separate music performances occurred on Saturday night; The SU Battle of the Bands took place in Evert Dining Hall, and Leslie Helpert performed in Charlie’s Coffeehouse. The weekend culminated on Sunday morning with the University worship service held in Weber Chapel. It was certainly a great weekend for all who attended!

    Admissions Events Approaching Fast

Many important Admissions events are coming up in the very near future, and we need YOU to help us spread the word to interested prospective students.

The first important date to remember is October 4th, the Fall Open House for Prospective Students. Students will have the opportunity to speak with SU faculty, students, and admissions staff, as well as take a tour of the campus and attend varying information programs. Students can register for the Fall Open House online by visiting www.susqu.edu/admissions/fallopenhouseform.htm
. To see a schedule of the day for October 4th, please click here.

In conjunction with our Fall Open House, there is also a Getaway Bus Trip for prospective students from selected areas. Students will be picked up on Friday, October 3rd, spend the night on campus and attend the Open House on Saturday, then be bussed home. For more information on the Bus Trip, please click
    here.

Our Fall In-Action Days will take place in October as well. You may suggest that the In-Action Days would be a wonderful time to spend an overnight with a student on campus! October 10th is Science In-Action Day; the 13th is Liberal Arts In-Action Day; the 24th is Business In-Action Day; and the 27th is Writing In-Action Day. The In-Action Day programs offer intense two hour workshops in many academic areas. A student can register for one of the In-Action Day programs at www.susqu.edu/admissions/inaction.htm.

Please inform all interested prospective students of theses dates, and let us know if there is any information that we can provide them.

    Hot Off the Presses!

-Susquehanna University has been profiled as one of the 351 best colleges in the nation by The Princeton Review, which released the ratings in mid-August. The Princeton Review ranks Susquehanna as #10 in a top-20 list for the "Best Quality of Life," joining such other institutions as the University of Richmond, Dartmouth College, Williams College and Amherst College. In addition to the quality of life category, SU was ranked #8 for "Students Happy with their Financial Aid."

-Susquehanna University's School of Arts, Humanities and Communications has added graphic design to the list of majors available to students.

-The Arlin M. Adams Center for Law and Society is bringing National Public Radio's award-winning program, "Justice Talking" to campus later this month. The program will explore the issue of academic freedom during a fast-paced hour of debate, interspersed with questions from the live studio audience.

Crusader Campus Hot Spot: Java City

The name Java City is a bit deceiving. This month’s Crusader Campus Hot Spot is not very big, in fact, Java City is nestled in a small spot in the center of Mellon Lounge in the Degenstein Campus Center. This small piece of SU has been the most popular spot on campus since the start of classes, and there are always students flocked around the stand. The freshly brewed coffee made of blends from around the world is a delicious way for students to jump-start their day after a long night of studying. Java City also features Met-Rx fruit smoothie boosters as well as many sweet treats that make great snacks (or even small meals) between classes!

    Fall Concert Announced

The Student Activities Committee has announced that Michelle Branch and the Pat McGee Band will perform in Weber Chapel Auditorium on October 10th. This double bill features two of the hottest bands in college rock today. Michelle Branch’s debut CD was released in 2000, and she has quickly grown into one of the most popular young rockers today on the strength of her own singles as well as her performances with the legendary Carlos Santana. She has sold over 2.5 million CDs and has won both a Grammy and a MTV Video Award. The Pat McGee Band was formed in 1996. They have built a strong grassroots following up and down the east coast from their amazing live acts and they routinely sell-out wherever they play.

The Fall 2003 concert is just one of a long line of incredible concert bills at SU. Past performers include the Goo Goo Dolls, Our Lady Peace, Adam Sandler, George Carlin, Jon Stewart, Dave Chapelle and Jim Breuer, Rusted Root, Busta Rhymes, Collective Soul, and way way back when, even The Doors!

    News & Notes

    TABLE BANNER UPDATE

After receiving many comments about the APAN College Fair display last fall, we purchased 50 table banners for the exclusive use of APAN members beginning with the spring 2003 fairs. Unfortunately, many of these table banners were never returned, and with the fall fair season upon us, we need these banners back!

Please check any APAN supplies you may have left over from last year, and if you still have a table banner, please return it to us ASAP! Additionally, after you have completed a fair, please return the table banners to us along with your inquiry cards within three business days unless you are covering another fair in the near future. It is important that we have enough banners available to cover all of the upcoming fairs. Thank you very much!

    APAN WEB SITE UPDATE

Please continue to check the APAN Web site at www.susqu.edu/apan. We are continually making updates and improvements, and many of the key aspects of the program are now run on the Web site. Members can update their personal information, refer a prospective student, view the Fall 2003 College Fair Spreadsheet, order an APAN Polo Shirt, and read their favorite monthly newsletter, The Pipeline! Also, the 2003-2004 Edition of the APAN Handbook and an online College Fair Evaluation Form will soon be available.

    STUDENT REFERRAL FORMS

In late September/early October, all APAN members will receive special student referral forms in the mail. These referral forms will allow APAN members to refer prospective students as well as waive the application fee for any high school senior applying to SU. Be on the lookout for this referral form in the mail!

    2003-2004 MANUAL

The new & updated APAN manual is currently in production and will be mailed out and placed online by mid-October. We will also send each APAN member an updated course catalog for 2003-2005 and our new viewbook.

    APAN POLO SHIRTS

If you have not already ordered an APAN polo shirt, we still have a limited number available. The shirts cost $20 and are available in M, L, XL and XXL (add $2 for XXL). To order your APAN polo shirt, please click here.
