The rainforest of Northern Queensland.
This ecosystem is obviously quite different from the Red Center of Australia. The rainforest exists as a narrow band in Northern Queensland between the Coral Sea and the mountains of the Great Dividing Range. We reached it by driving a few kilometers north of Cairns. map

The canopy is full all year around as different trees shed their leaves
at different times of the year. Remember, July is the dead of "winter"
in Australia! Here though, the average daily temperature is still close
to 80 degrees F.
An epiphytic tree fern has established itself up a host tree. These structures can reach many feet across, store large amounts of rain water and reach up a ton in weight, sometimes even bringing the host tree crashing to the forest floor.

Talking of big structures, this is a saltwater crocodile, a "saltie". DO NOT APPROACH these animals, they hunt humans. DO NOT PADDLE OR SWIM in ponds or rivers unless you know these animals are not present. They will eat you! Really, I am not joking! This individual, which was about 14 feet long, was safely behind bars though he was watching every move that we made. Really big salties can reach over 8m (25 feet) long.
