First Year Student Housing

Smith Hall Hassinger Hall Reed Hall

There are currently three all first-year residence halls at Susquehanna. Smith Hall is the larger of the two halls and houses approximately 275 students on three co-ed floors. Smith is well-known for its lively, friendly atmosphere. Smith's neighbor Reed Hall is smaller, but similar in design and features. Hassinger houses approximately 85 students on three floors and is co-ed by wing. Hassinger Hall provides a cozy, close-knit atmosphere.

Each of these halls has Head Residents and Resident Assistants to coordinate hall programs and foster community in the hall. Throughout the year, and especially in the first few weeks, a variety of activities are offered to students in the first-year halls. Barbecues, holiday parties and coffee nights allow students to meet and socialize. Other activities include organized sports events, movie nights and decorating competitions. Not only do the Resident Assistants offer entertaining activities, but they also sponsor informational programs including "mocktail" parties, gender and diversity programs, volunteer project speakers and "Ask an RA" sessions. The programs help to build open and respectful communities in the Residence Halls.

Rooms in residence halls include beds, desks, and dressers. Students must supply their own sheets, blankets, pillows, pillowcases, and towels. See the publication A Little Bit About a Lot of Things for suggested items to bring to campus. This publication is written by members of the Orientation Planning Committee and is provided at the summer testing days as part of the new student packet.

All residence halls are connected by fiber-optic cable to the University's network. Each room has a telephone line (students supply their own telephone) and each student receives a PIN, which enables him/her to make long distance calls which are charged to his/her account monthly. Additionally, each student has his/her own voice mail box. These services are included in the cost of room.
