Summer Crew Leaders
Introduction
Playing an integral role in the administration and overall success of the Summer Preview Programs, the Summer Crew Leaders will work as peer leaders and are primarily responsible for facilitating and personalizing the summer orientation experience for incoming university students attending the one-day Summer Preview Programs held in June and July. Crew Leaders will assist new students in their initial transition to SU, providing perspective about college life and the SU campus while introducing information related to university academics, campus resources, policies and procedures. In addition, they will work with the academic schools and administrative offices to prepare new students for their extended orientation experience in the fall.
Through this position, Crew Leaders will develop and enhance communication skills, leadership skills, group work skills, and enjoy the benefits of networking with key campus administrators, faculty personnel, and university offices.
Qualifications
To be considered as an applicant for the position of Crew Leader, a student must present the following qualifications:
- Understand, appreciate and be able to articulate the mission and goals of Susquehanna University.
- Be currently enrolled as a full-time Susquehanna University student having completed a minimum of one semester and have a cumulative average of 2.5 or higher.
- Must be a community member in good academic and disciplinary standing.
- Be familiar and knowledgeable of the University campus, its history, resources and services and feel comfortable sharing this information to new students and their respective family members.
- Demonstrated leadership ability through previous employment or campus involvement.
- Must be available to participate fully in all scheduled Summer Preview programs held in June and July 2008.
- Must also be available to participate in a weekend training prior to the start of the Preview Days in June 2008.
Remuneration
Summer Crew Leaders will receive the following remuneration package as part of their participation in the summer preview programs:
- A summer stipend consisting of $300.00 to cover four sessions over the course of three weeks and the summer training weekend.
- On-campus accommodations will be afforded to Crew Leaders who require overnight stays when the summer preview programs are in session. These arrangements will be managed through the Office of Residence Life and all rules and regulations related to residential housing will be observed.
- Crew Leaders will be provided breakfast, lunch and dinner meals when preview programs are in session. Meals will be provided during training sessions. Other meals will be the responsibilities of the staff member.
- Crew Leaders will be provided a staff shirt to be worn in conjunction with other required apparel for the summer preview programs.
Role Functions and Commitments
Summer Crew Leaders will be responsible for the following job functions and time commitments:
- Lead incoming first-year students, transfer students and parents and family members attending the programs.
- Realistically, yet enthusiastically, represent the University and serve as a role model for new students entering SU.
- Conduct and facilitate program activities that will introduce, promote and educate new students and their families about SU and the academic and co-curricular services and resources.
- Familiarize new students and their families with the campus surroundings and the community of Selinsgrove, PA.
- Assist faculty advisors in providing personalized advisement and comprehension regarding academic decisions and course review and selection.
- Convey information about university services offered through Student Life, First-Year Programs, and about campus life in general that will set the foundation for a successful transition in the fall.
- Assist campus units with the execution of presentations and participate as necessary.
- Assist in all aspects of summer preview program materials preparation as necessary.
- Perform general administrative tasks as assigned by the Office of First-Year Programs.
- Work as a responsible member of a team and maintain a positive attitude and flexibility as it pertains to the work environment, responsibilities, and representation of the University.
SCHEDULE OF TRAINING DATES AND PROGRAM SESSION DATES
Spring/Summer Training Dates
Crew Leaders are required to participate in an introductory information session and weekend training program prior to their involvement in the Summer Preview programs. The dates for these training sessions will occur as follows:
- Program Overview and Leadership Skills Training: Friday, June 20, 2008, 9:00AM – 4:00PM; Saturday, June 21, 2008, 9:00AM – 4:00PM; Sunday, June 21, 2008: 9:00AM – 2:00PM.
Program Session Dates
Crew Leaders are required to participate fully in all scheduled program dates and times. All session dates are one-day programs. Three sessions will be held on Mondays, and one will be held on a Saturday. Each session day will commence at 7:00AM and conclude at approximately 6:00PM:
