Comparative Vertebrate Anatomy (Biology 302) Lecture and Laboratory. Examines the evolutionary relationships among the vertebrate classes using comparative morphological evidence. Utilizes an organ system approach to the study of anatomy and considers unique adaptations of select vertebrate taxa. 1999- Fall, alternate years.
Human Anatomy (Biology 210)Lecture and Laboratory. Explores human form and function. Emphasis will be on an organ system approach with consideration of pathology and histology. Course serves as a complement to human physiology. Laboratory explores human gross anatomy and histology using a combination of human skeletons, cat dissection,and histological preparations. Animal Behavior (Biology 500) Lecture and Laboratory. Explores the adaptive value of animal behavior with an emphasis on theory and hypothesis testing using examples from the literature. Major topics include sexual selection, mating systems, parental care, sociality, foraging theory, anti-predator behavior, game theory, and communication framed within an evolutionary context. 2000, Spring, alternate yearsIssues in Human Biology (Biology 010). Environmental Biology (Zoology 121) Lecture and discussion. A non-majors course covering basic ecological principles and human impacts on the environment. Discussions topics include student debates, simulations, and group problem-solving on environmental issues. Spring, 1999.
Invertebrate Zoology (Biology 520,323) Lecture and Laboratory. An advanced undergraduate/graduate course covering diverse invertebrate phyla. Ecology, behavior, taxonomy, and morphology are covered within an evolutionary framework. Evolution of Human Behavior (Honors and upper level majors seminar). Discussion. Course provides an introduction to theoretical principles of human sociobiology and human behavioral ecology. Topics include the origins and function of sexual reproduction, mating behavior, human mate choice, patterns of violence in families, altruistic behavior, the evolution of brain size, the origins of language, and the relationship between genes and culture. Ecology/Evolution (Biology 313) Laboratory/Field (required for Biology Majors). Course explores fundamentals of ecology and evolutionary biology. Laboratory emphasis is placed on field data collection methods and scientific writing with an introduction to statistical methods and computer-based population modeling. 1992-1995
Human Anatomy and Physiology (Biology 201) Laboratory (required for Allied Health Majors). Course surveys the structure and function of the human body. Laboratory emphasis is placed strongly on anatomy using a cat model and histology. 1991-1995. Responsibilities included training teaching assistants, developing new labs, and coordinating fourteen laboratory sections as well as teaching.
Arachnology (Biology 660) Laboratory/Field (elective). Graduate/undergraduate. Course surveys anatomy, taxonomy and ecology of arachnids with special emphasis on spiders. Some guest lectures. 1996
Biodiversity of Dune Ecosystems (Biology 662) Laboratory/field lecture. Graduate/undergraduate. Course examines methods for assessing biodiversity using spiders as an example taxon. Some guest lectures with George Uetz. 1996.
