Proposed scheme for the regulation of vitellogenesis in female Drosophila melanogaster. JHs stimulate: (1) YP synthesis by the ovary and fat body , and (2) ecdysteroid synthesis by the ovary. Ecdysteroids produced by the ovary (possibly) and by other tissues stimulate (3) YP synthesis by the fat body , and ecdysteroids produced by the ovary stimulate (4) YP uptake into developing oocytes. Sex peptide stimulates JH synthesis, and the resulting JH stimulates both YP synthesis and ovarian function, and enhanced ovarian ecdysteroidogenesis.
