Electronic Access to Information - Cross Search, SFX Article Linking, iLink and Other Online Resources

Cross Search and SFX Article Linking

The Library's two newest additions to its technology arsenal are Cross Search and SFX Article Linking. These two systems work together to provide you with convenient and seamless access to our online periodical literature.

Cross Search allows you to search up to 10 databases at one time, no matter the vendor. We have orgranized our more than 100 databases in 12 broad subject collections (Quicksets) and 33 specific subject collections (Categories). Cross Search is available through our home page or directly at http://sfx.susqu.edu:8331/V/.

SFX Article Linking seamlessly retrieves the full text of an article, no matter which database you are searching and no matter which vendor or publisher provides the full text of the article. Another component of SFX is the A to Z Periodicals List. This is a listing of all of our online and print journals, arranged by title, vendor/publisher or subject. See this tool at http://sfx.susqu.edu:3210/su_sfx/azlist/default.

iLink (Online Public Access Catalog)

The Library’s online catalog, iLink, is accessible via any computer with Internet access. Books, scores and media materials can be searched by author/composer, title, subject, keyword, periodical title or call number; and searches can be limited by format (e.g., videos, scores); by publication date; by language; by location (e.g., Reference, Music Scores); and other categories. The Library uses the SIRSI Unicorn Academe online.

iLink is an online version of the catalog that includes enhanced content for many recent publications such as:

Additional features allow users to customize their own web page when accessing the online catalog. By using the My Account feature and inserting an ID and PIN number*, faculty can:

*A Library ID and PIN number is mailed to each faculty member. These should remain confidential to protect your records and privileges. If you forget your PIN, fail to receive one, or have any questions, please ask a librarian to assist you.

To use iLink, select iLink Library Catalog under Resources, from the library's web page or visit: http://athena.susqu.edu/uhtbin/webcat

Online Databases

In addition to extensive print materials, the Library subscribes to over 115 online databases, general and multi-disciplinary as well as discipline-specific, many with full-text articles in scholarly journals. These can also be accessed from the library’s web page. Examples of four major general databases are:

Academic Search Premier (EBSCO) - Full-text for more than 4,500 journals; abstracts & indexing for 8,0250+ journals

Academic OneFile – Full-text for more than 4,200 journals; abstracts and indexes for 8,000+, primarily scholarly.

Lexis-Nexis – Full-text database for news and articles in business, company information, finance, politics & government, medical news and information, text of laws & legislation

Omnifile Full Text Mega (HW Wilson) - Full text of articles in all subjects from nearly 2000 periodicals

e-Books/Sheet Music

The Library subscribes to two e-Book collections with a combined total of over 41,000 books. All book titles are listed in iLink, the Library’s online catalog, and contain direct links to the electronic version of the book.

In addition to books, the Ebrary e-Book collection includes over 8000 scores and pieces of sheet music. These are not listed in iLink and must be accessed directly through the Ebrary database, available from the Library’s web page under Resources – eBooks, or at this URL: http://www.susqu.edu/library/ebooks/ebooks.htm. From this page, select the Ebrary database, do an “advanced” search and select “sheet music” under the “Documents” drop-down menu.

To adhere to copyright restrictions, only a limited number of pages can be printed from the online eBook collections.

A complete list of all online databases and other research sources is available on the library’s web page under Resources: "Library Databases" (http://www.susqu.edu/library/database/fullListing.cfm)

Databases by Subject and by Title

Databases are arranged and can be accessed by subject from the bottom of the library’s web page by selecting the subject of interest. They can also be quickly accessed by title if you know the name of the database (Selected Web). Cross Search allows you to search up to 10 subject-related databases simultaneously. The Everything category links to a complete alphabetical list of resources in online, CD-ROM and print formats. The list provides information on scope of and location for each database or title, and a link to those sources that are in electronic format.
