SELINSGROVE, (Pa.) – Susquehanna University will present a lecture by Mexican professor and politican Carlos Imaz on Tuesday, March 28. The event, which begins at 8 p.m. in Meeting Rooms 3-5 of Degenstein Campus Center, is free and open to the public. Imaz will discuss Mexico’s upcoming presidential elections and the growing presence of the left in Latin American politics.
Imaz is a professor of sociology at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), Mexico’s most prestigious university. He was president of the Partido de la Revolución Democrática (PRD) in Mexico City. The PRD was the first political party to significantly challenge the Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI), the party which dominated Mexican politics for 70 years. Imaz also served as the U.S. equivalent of mayor for the largest “borough” in Mexico City.
Imaz holds a Ph.D. from Stanford University. He has published on the topics of education, politics, and, most recently, the Zapatistas, a rebel army in Chiapas named after the famous leader of the Mexican Revolution Emiliano Zapata.
Imaz’s lecture at Susquehanna is part of the 2005-2006 university theme, “Latin American Mosaic: Nations and Cultures/Mosaico Latinoamericano: Naciones y Culturas.” The concept of a year-long university theme presents opportunity for the Susquehanna community to develop a community dialogue around a central idea or question. With both curricular and co-curricular applications, a university theme supports Susquehanna’s goals of developing a common experience among students, fostering a culture of intellectual engagement, creating a diverse community, and supporting communication, collaboration and creativity across campus.
