Eck, Gibboney Earn MAC Football Honors
SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Susquehanna University senior fullback Jason Eck and junior free safety Ben Gibboney were both named to the Middle Atlantic Conference Football Weekly Honor Roll after helping the Crusaders to a 34-27 victory at Albright on Saturday. Eck (Williamsport, PA/Loyalsock) carried 21 times for a season-high 122 yards and two touchdowns while Gibboney (Huntingdon, PA/Huntingdon Area) keyed a defensive effort that held the Lions 121 yards below their MAC-leading average of 499 yards per game with five tackles and four pass breakups. Eck scored on a pair of 2-yard runs, one to cap a 19-play, 91-yard drive that consumed 10:32 that gave Susquehanna a 7-0 lead, and his second in the first minute of the fourth quarter to knot the score at 27-27. Eck's 122-yard effort was the second-best of his career and his fifth career 100-yard game, while his two touchdowns increased his school-record career total to 44 rushing touchdowns. He also moved into fourth place on the Susquehanna career rushing yards list with 2,151 yards and is just 28 yards shy of passing Hank Belcolle for second place. Gibboney was a key part of a Crusader defense that shut out the Lion offense in the second half, holding Albright quarterback John Port , who entered the game averaging nearly 374 yards per game, to 259 yards and one touchdown. He also turned in two key defensive plays with a fourth-down pass breakup in the end zone with Susquehanna trailing 27-20 in the third quarter, and a knockdown of a last-ditch Hail Mary pass as time expired to clinch the win. The MAC honors are the second in Eck's career, as he was also named to the Honor Roll in October 2002, while Gibboney was named MAC Defensive Player of the Week in October 2002 and September 2003. Susquehanna (4-4 overall, 3-4 MAC) closes its season with two home games, with Lebanon Valley (3-5 overall, 2-5 MAC) visiting on Saturday at 1 p.m.
