Women's Soccer, Volleyball to Open Playoffs on Wednesday

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Susquehanna University women's soccer and women's volleyball teams will be in action Wednesday night in Commonwealth Conference semifinal action.

The Crusader women's soccer team will host Elizabethtown at 7:00 p.m. at Sassafras Field while the volleyball squad will travel to Elizabethtown to battle the Blue Jays at 7:00 p.m.

Admission to both events will be $4.00 for adults, $3.00 for seniors and $2.00 for students with children under 6 admitted free.

In women's soccer, Susquehanna (13-4-1 overall, 5-1-1 Commonwealth) is seeded second and will host the Blue Jays (9-7-1 overall, 4-2-1 Commonwealth) in the playoffs for the second time in three seasons. In their first-ever postseason game in 2002, the Crusaders defeated the Blue Jays 2-1 on a goal by Lindsay Nevins with 4:13 left in the second half.

The Crusaders blanked Elizabethtown 3-0 at home on Oct. 13 as Nevins scored a pair of goals to help Susquehanna to its fourth straight win over the Blue Jays after losing its first eight meetings with Elizabethtown.

Wednesday night's winner will advance to Saturday's championship where it will face the winner of the other semifinal between top-seeded Messiah, seeking its fifth straight conference championship, and fourth-seeded Albright which is making its first-ever playoff appearance.

In volleyball, the Crusaders (20-10 overall, 5-2 Commonwealth) are seeded third via tiebreaker after finishing in a three-way tie for second place with Elizabethtown and Lebanon Valley.

The Blue Jays (24-8 overall, 5-2 Commonwealth) are making their first postseason appearance since 1995 and swept the Crusaders 3-0 on Oct. 6 in Selinsgrove in their only regular-season meeting.

Meanwhile, Lebanon Valley will travel to national powerhouse Juniata in the other semifinal, as the Eagles seek their 24 th consecutive conference championship. The championship match will be held at the site of the better seed on Saturday.
