Fifth "Battle of the Boot" Set for Friday
SELINSGROVE, PA – Intensity will reign once again as Susquehanna faces off against host Lycoming in the fifth annual “Battle of the Boot” men's soccer match on Friday afternoon at 5 p.m. at the newly-renovated Shangraw Athletic Complex. Both teams will carry 2-0 records into the match with victories over Frostburg State and Neumann as part of the Lycoming Kickoff Classic last weekend. The Warriors were awarded the Classic championship after posting a 6-1 goal differential in their victories versus a 5-1 differential for the Crusaders. Lycoming standout Jeff Kocher leads the Warrior attack with four goals in the squad's first two games, while Crusader freshman Matt Gawlas paces the Susquehanna offense with two goals on the young season. The “Battle of the Boot” is played for a bronzed and mounted soccer shoe and was first contested in 2001, with the Crusaders holding a 3-1 edge in the hotly-contested series. After the Crusaders won the trophy in each of the first two seasons by identical 2-1 scores, Lycoming captured the Boot for the first time with a dramatic 2-1 overtime victory in Williamsport in 2003. The Crusaders regained the trophy last season with a 3-1 win before a standing-room-only crowd in the first night game played at Sassafras Field on Sept. 10. All-time, the Crusaders hold a 21-14-3 advantage in the series with the Warriors.
