Crusaders to Host #1 Messiah in Soccer Twinbill
SELINSGROVE, PA – The Messiah College men's and women's soccer teams, each undefeated and ranked number one in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division III polls, will visit Susquehanna in a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader on Wednesday evening.
The women's game will begin at 5:00 p.m. with the men's game to follow at 7:00 p.m. at Sassafras Field. Admission is free.
Messiah's women's team is 12-0 overall and 4-0 in the Commonwealth Conference, and is seeking its sixth consecutive conference championship. The Falcons have outscored their opponents 43-3 this season and have four different players with at least six goals.
The Crusader women are 6-6-1 overall and 2-0-1 in league play, and are coming off a 2-1 overtime victory against Albright on Saturday as reigning conference Player of the Week A.J. Chianese scored her eighth goal of the season as time expired in the first overtime period.
The Falcons have defeated the Crusaders in the conference championship game in two of the last three years, including a 10-0 rout in last year's title contest.
The Messiah men are 14-0 overall and 4-0 in the conference following a 6-1 win over Moravian on Saturday. The Falcons have allowed just two goals in their last nine games and are led offensively by Middleburg graduate David McClellan, who has scored 12 goals this season.
In goal, Middleburg grad Dustin Shambach has started all 14 games and has compiled a 0.50 goals against average for the Falcons, who are the reigning NCAA Division III champions and have won three of the last five national titles.
Susquehanna (7-5-1 overall, 2-1-1 Commonwealth) is paced by Southern Columbia grad Nate Snyder who has scored 10 goals in 13 games including back-to-back two-goal games. Snyder, who was named the Commonwealth Conference Player of the Week for his efforts last week, is the Crusaders' career leader in goals (33) and points (76).
