Men's Soccer to Face Widener in Commonwealth Semifinals
SELINSGROVE , PA – The Susquehanna University men's soccer team will travel to Widener University for a Commonwealth Conference semifinal match on Tuesday night beginning at 7:00 p.m. at Leslie C. Quick, Jr. Stadium.
The Crusaders (9-7-3 overall, 4-3-0 Commonwealth), making their third Commonwealth Conference playoff appearance in the last four years, earned the third seed in the conference playoffs and will look for their second victory of the season over the second-seeded Pride (8-8-2 overall, 5-2-0 Commonwealth).
Ticket prices for the match are $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and $2 for students, with free admission for children under age six.
Susquehanna defeated Widener 2-1 in Chester on Sept. 30 as senior Justin Makar scored a pair of goals. The Crusaders are 9-5 all-time against the Pride, including a 5-2 road record.
Makar paced the Crusaders in scoring this season with five goals and four assists for 14 points, while senior Austin Kelsey played every minute in goal and recorded a 1.10 goals against average along with a conference-best eight shutouts.
The Pride are led offensively by William James, who scored eight goals and three assists for 19 points, while Marty Squicciarini made 14 starts in goal and posted a 1.48 goals against average and three shutouts.
In its two previous playoff appearances, the Crusaders lost 5-1 at Messiah in 2003 and fell 3-0 at Elizabethtown in 2005. Widener last appeared in the conference playoffs in 2004, dropping a 3-0 decision at Messiah.
The winner of Tuesday's game will face the winner of Tuesday's other semifinal match between fourth-seeded Elizabethtown and top-seeded Messiah in Saturday's championship game, with the conference champion earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament.
