Gary Brown Named Offensive Coordinator

SELINSGROVE, PA – Susquehanna University has named former National Football League running back Gary Brown as offensive coordinator, head coach Steve Briggs announced Monday.

Brown, a standout back at Penn State from 1987 to 1990, played eight seasons in the NFL from 1991 through 1999 and rushed for 4,300 yards and 21 touchdowns as a member of three teams.

An assistant coach at Lycoming College for the past three seasons, Brown replaces Ron Miller, who resigned in April after seven seasons to become head football coach at West York High School .

“We are extremely fortunate to add someone with Gary 's credentials and knowledge of the game to our staff,” said Briggs, who will be entering his 17 th season as head coach. “He has been a winner at all levels of football. His experience at Division III will be beneficial as we look forward to joining the Liberty League in 2007.”

Brown is a 1987 graduate of Williamsport High School and played both at running back and defensive back at Penn State from 1987 to 1990. He was drafted in the eighth round (214 th pick) of the 1991 NFL draft by the Houston Oilers and played there for five seasons, rushing for 1,002 yards in 1993 to earn All-AFC honors.

He played with the San Diego Chargers in 1997 and rushed for 945 yards before finishing his career with the New York Giants, for whom he rushed for a career-high 1,063 yards in 1998.

Following his retirement from the NFL, Brown moved into the coaching ranks as offensive coordinator at Williamsport Area High School from 2000 to 2002, before moving to Lycoming in the summer of 2003 as running backs coach.

Brown also coached running backs at New York Giants training camp last summer as part of the NFL's Minority Coaching Fellowship program, and coached tight ends at the Penn State Football Camp last June.

Brown earned a bachelor of science degree in sports administration from Lock Haven University in 2005, and currently resides in Montoursville with his wife, Kim, and their three children, Malena (8), Dorianna (3) and Tre (eight months).
