Men's Golf to Compete at Commonwealth Championships

SELINSGROVE, PA – After seeing its streak of 10 consecutive conference championships come to an end with a third-place finish at last year's Commonwealth Conference tournament, the Susquehanna University men's golf team is looking forward to beginning a new streak when the Crusaders tee off with six other schools in the two-day, 54-hole meet, which begins Saturday and ends Sunday at the Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort near East Stroudsburg.

Last season, the tournament was held at the Hershey Country Club and the Crusaders shot 651 over the two-day event to finish third behind Albright (647) and Moravian (648).

Two members of last year's lineup along with a third player with previous conference championship experience will compete for 17th-year head coach Don Harnum.

Sophomore Scott Cruff (Newington, CT/Newington) finished sixth at the Commonwealth championships as a freshman, just four strokes behind medalist Ryan Ogurcak of Lebanon Valley . Cruff is averaging a team-best 75.2 strokes in 17 rounds this season, including a career-best 69 in winning the Susquehanna Fall Invitational.

Cruff, who has broken 80 in each of his last 16 rounds and a career average of 75.6, has finished in the top five in five different meets this season, including a second-place finish at the Glenmaura National Collegiate Invitational last weekend.

Sophomore Pat Serfass (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus) tied for 18 th at last year's Commonwealth championships and is second on the squad behind Cruff with an average of 76.3 over 18 rounds this season. He won the Elizabethtown Fall Blue Jay Classic with a career-low 68 and finished in a tie for second at the Susquehanna Fall Classic.

Sophomore Mike Schwenk (Miller Place, NY/Stony Brook) will be making his championship tournament debut after ranking third on the team with an average of 77.4 in nine rounds this season, while finishing in the top five of three different tournaments including a season-low 72 at the Gettysburg Spring Invitational to finish in a tie for second.

Rounding out the lineup are freshman Sean Jackson (Huntingdon, PA/Huntingdon Area), who averaged an 80.1 over 17 rounds this season and won the Moravian Fall Invitational with a 72, and junior Greg Mascioli (Dallas, PA/Wyoming Seminary), who has seen limited action over the past two seasons but finished 11 th at the MAC championships as a freshman.
