Crusader Women's Hoops to Face Messiah in Playoffs

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – For the first time in five years, the Susquehanna University women's basketball team will participate in the Commonwealth Conference playoffs when the Crusaders travel to Messiah for semifinal action on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. at Brubaker Auditorium.

Admission is $6 for adults, $4 for seniors and $2 for students with children under six admitted free. Current Susquehanna University students who present their school identification card at the door will be admitted free of charge, with their normal cost of admission being funded by the Varsity Club.

The game will also be aired live on WQSU-FM (88.9) and online at www.wqsu.com with the pregame show beginning at 5:45 p.m. Jack Burns will call the play-by-play action with color commentary provided by Chris Pride.

The Crusaders (14-11 overall, 6-8 Commonwealth) earned the fourth and final playoff spot in the Commonwealth Conference on Saturday afternoon with a 68-45 victory over Lebanon Valley combined with Juniata's 72-57 victory over Albright. Susquehanna and Juniata finished in a tie for fourth place but the Crusaders earned the tiebreaker by virtue of their sweep of the season series over the Eagles.

Messiah (23-2 overall, 13-1 Commonwealth) was ranked 10th in Division III in the most recent D3hoops.com Top 25 poll and carries a seven-game winning streak into Wednesday's contest following an 86-75 overtime win at Widener on Saturday.

The Falcons have won 13 consecutive games against the Crusaders since Nov. 30, 1999 including victories this season by scores of 74-56 in Grantham on Jan. 11 and 57-47 in Selinsgrove on Feb. 8. Wednesday's game will be the first postseason meeting between the schools.

Susquehanna is 15-16 all-time in conference playoffs and has not played a postseason game since a 72-55 loss at Elizabethtown in the Commonwealth semifinals on Feb. 21, 2001. The Crusaders' last playoff win came on Feb. 23, 1999 with an 82-71 overtime victory over DeSales (then known as Allentown College) at O.W. Houts Gymnasium.

Messiah has won or shared each of the last seven Commonwealth Conference regular-season championships and has earned postseason titles in 2002, 2003 and 2005. Since the start of the 1999-2000 season, the Falcons are 92-6 in regular-season conference games and 8-3 in playoff contests.

The winner of Wednesday night's game will advance to Saturday's championship game versus the winner of the other semifinal game between Widener and host Moravian, with the overall conference champion earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III playoffs.
