Men's Basketball to Battle Juniata in Commonwealth Semis
SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Susquehanna University men's basketball team will travel to Juniata College for a Commonwealth Conference semifinal game on Wednesday night at Memorial Gymnasium in Huntingdon. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m., and admission is $6 for adults, $4 for seniors and $2 for students with children under six admitted free.
The game will also be aired live on WQSU-FM (88.9) and online at www.wqsu.com, beginning with the pregame show at 6:45 p.m. Jack Burns will call the play-by-play action with color commentary provided by Nick Marrongelle.
The Crusaders (16-9 overall, 8-6 Commonwealth) earned the third seed in the four-team field thanks to a 74-69 come-from-behind overtime victory at Lebanon Valley in the regular-season finale on Saturday, while the Eagles (15-10 overall, 9-5 Commonwealth) locked up the second seed with an 82-67 home win over Susquehanna last Thursday night.
Susquehanna earned its first postseason berth since 2002-03 thanks to the play of junior forward Kevin Cuff (Pottsville, PA/Nativity B.V.M.), who averaged 17.5 points per game to rank second in the Commonwealth Conference in scoring.
Cuff, a transfer from Division II Millersville, also ranks second in the conference in three-point field-goal percentage (37-for-78, 47.4 percent), third in free-throw percentage (96-for-113, 85.0 percent) and sixth in rebounds (6.6 per game).
The Eagles are making their first conference playoff appearance since the 1988-89 season behind the contributions of junior forward Brian Cannon, who was the lone Juniata player to average in double figures (15.0 points per game) despite coming off the bench.
The teams split their two regular-season meetings, with the Crusaders holding on for a 63-61 victory in Selinsgrove on Jan. 10 before the Eagles' 82-67 triumph at home on Feb. 15. Both schools will be departing the Commonwealth Conference at the conclusion of the season to join the newly-formed Landmark Conference for 2007-08.
Susquehanna is 13-15 all-time in the conference playoffs, and will be playing its first postseason contest since a 92-86 loss to Elizabethtown in the Commonwealth Conference championship game on March 1, 2003. The Crusaders have lost five straight road playoff games since a 78-65 win at Wilkes in the MAC quarterfinals in 1994.
The winner of Wednesday night's game will advance to Saturday's championship game versus the winner of the other semifinal game between fourth-seeded Widener and top-seeded Messiah, with the overall conference champion earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III playoffs.
