Gary Brown Resigns as Offensive Coordinator

SELINSGROVE, PA – Susquehanna University offensive coordinator Gary Brown has resigned to take a position as running backs coach at Division 1 FBS Rutgers.

Brown, a standout back at Penn State and in the NFL, was the Crusaders offensive coordinator for two years. In 2007, sophomore running back Dave Paveletz produced the second-highest single-season rushing total in program history and was named first-team All-Liberty League.

"Gary Brown did a tremendous job during his time here at SU," said Crusader head coach Steve Briggs.  "An opportunity like the one he has at Rutgers with Coach Schiano is a terrific thing for Gary and his family. We wish him well in the Big East next fall, and we will certainly miss him here in Selinsgrove."

Brown is a 1987 graduate of Williamsport High School and played both at running back and defensive back at Penn State from 1987 to 1990. He was drafted in the eighth round (214th pick) of the 1991 NFL draft by the Houston Oilers and played there for five seasons, rushing for 1,002 yards in 1993 to earn All-AFC honors.

He played with the San Diego Chargers in 1997 and rushed for 945 yards before finishing his career with the New York Giants, for whom he rushed for a career-high 1,063 yards in 1998.

Following his retirement from the NFL, Brown moved into the coaching ranks as offensive coordinator at Williamsport Area High School from 2000 to 2002, before moving to Lycoming College in the summer of 2003 as running backs coach. He joined the Susquehanna staff in spring 2006.

Brown also coached running backs at New York Giants training camp in 2005, then worked with the Green Bay Packers in 2006 and Carolina Panthers in 2007 as part of the NFL's Minority Coaching Fellowship program. He also coached tight ends at the Penn State Football Camp in June 2005.

Brown earned a bachelor of science degree in sports administration from Lock Haven University in 2005. He and his wife, Kim, have three children, Malena, Dorianna and Tre.
