Tryout Information
General information:
All full-time male and female Susquehanna University students (currently enrolled or accepted to the university) in good academic standing with a desire to show their school spirit are encouraged to try out for the SU cheerleading team. Prior cheerleading experience is not required but strongly recommended; experience in gymnastics, dance or weightlifting is also helpful.
Those who make the fall (football) squad will have the option to continue for winter (basketball) season. If any openings occur, a second tryout will be held in October/November.
All candidates will be asked to demonstrate a cheer, chant and dance, four jumps -- side hurdler, front hurdler, toe touch and optional -- and stunting skills. Tumbling, while not required, can be demonstrated for bonus points. All tumbling skills demonstrated must be those you would feel comfortable performing on the track or gym floor as that is where they will be performed during the season. Anyone performing tumbling skills for tryouts will be expected to perform those same skills during all practices and games.
In addition to technique, candidates will be judged on voice projection, spirit and enthusiasm, crowd-leading ability and attitude. Technique can be perfected; a bad attitude cannot!
Tryouts for current students:
Upperclassman tryouts for the football cheerleading squad will be held in the spring. The dates will be announced in The Crusader, in other campus media, and on this site several weeks in advance and an informational meeting will be held prior to tryouts for all interested candidates.
Optional workout sessions will be held the week before tryouts begin. This is an opportunity to review skills that you will be judged on during tryouts. If you have not cheered before, this is a good chance to see if cheerleading may be for you. If you have taken some time off from the sport, this is a good "refresher course" before tryouts.
Tryouts will be held over the course of one week in a practice/workout format. This will give the coach an opportunity to see how candidates work together and will show the candidates' work ethic and attitude in addition to cheerleading skills.
Tryouts for incoming freshmen and transfer students:
Incoming freshmen and transfer students will try out by video. Tryout videos are due on May 1 of each year. Information outlining the tryout criteria (which is similar to the in-person tryout) is available in Word format below. If you cannot download the forms and need a hard copy, please e-mail Coach Jennifer Botchie with your home address.
