Beginning Violin Class

Beginner Violin Information
This class is for parent and child. Beginning violin students experience one-on-one instruction with Susquehanna music education students, under the teaching direction of Jennifer Sacher Wiley, associate professor of music at Susquehanna. Following this class the violin students are assigned to one of the music education students and continue their private instruction.

"World Music Drumming"

The World Music Drumming experience will include playing African drums and other related instruments, performing various drum ensemble selections, and experiencing improvisational techniques.

Guitar I

This course will introduce students to basic guitar chords, basic strumming patterns plus some guitar literature they can use for their own enjoyment. Each participant needs to bring their own guitar to class. Books will be provided by the instructor. Offered in the fall only.

Guitar II

This course will be a continuation of the beginning guitar experience. Students should enter this level knowing how to play comfortably in the key of D, G and A major. Experiences in reading traditional notation plus tab notation will continue with more time being given to transposition and the addition of new strumming patterns. Offered in the spring only.

Compose Now

Students will explore the role of improvisation in musical composition. They will create original keyboard compositions through guided activities that make musical composition "user-friendly."

Compositions will be created in both major and minor keys, blues and two Brazilian jazz montunos. This course is an excellent "first time" composition experience for young musicians, and one which lays a foundation for future compositional experiences. Students will be able to record their finished improvisations to share with family and friends!

This system has been used for 11 years in the Williamsport Area School District with great success and many happy young composers.
