Jerry Foley has assumed the head coaching position for men’s and women’s swimming & diving. Foley replaces Dan Phillips, who led the SU swimming & diving teams for one season during the 2007–08 academic year. Phillips replaced the late G. Edward “Ged” Schweikert III, who served Susquehanna for 38 years as head swimming & diving coach and associate professor of psychology.

“Jerry comes to us with a wealth of education and experience,” says Pam Samuelson, director of athletics. “We think he’s going to be a perfect fit at Susquehanna, and we know that the swimming & diving program is in good hands.”

Foley comes to Susquehanna from Lewisburg (Pa.) Area High School and NCAA Division I Bucknell University. He was Lewisburg’s head boys’ and girls’ swimming coach since November 2007, and he coached Bucknell’s swimmers and divers from 1998 to 2006, earning Patriot League Coach of the Year honors five times.

He also has been the head associate swimming coach for the Sunbury branch of the Greater Susquehanna Valley (Pa.) YMCA since October 2006. In 2009, his boys’ team placed eighth at the National YMCA short-course championships, while his combined boys’ and girls’ squad placed 11th.

Since August 2006, he has worked as a staff recruiter for Geisinger Center for Health Research in Danville, Pa.

Foley was an assistant swimming coach and physical education instructor for the Division I U.S. Military Academy from 1994 to 1998 and the head coach of Division II Adelphi University from 1989 to 1994. He also served as a physical education instructor and the aquatics director while at Adelphi.

During his tenure at Adelphi, he was the co–head coach of the nationally oriented Long Island Aquatic Club in Merrick, N.Y.

From 1986 to 1989, he worked as the aquatic director and assistant swimming coach at Deer Park High School in Deer Park, N.Y., and the head coach of Deer Park Aquatics, a community-based program.

Foley graduated with honors from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy with a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering in June 1984. He received his Master of Arts in physical education from Adelphi in January 1990.

Foley’s college teams have been consistently successful. He led the Bucknell men to a Patriot championship in 2003 and the women to league championships in 2003 through 2006. He helped the U.S. Military Academy win men’s Patriot titles in 1995 through 1998. Foley says he wants to maintain “family atmospheres” in the men’s and women’s programs. “We will all support each other and strive to achieve our best, both academically and athletically, while also embracing the  core values of respect and continuous improvement,” he says.
