Jay Lemons and StudentsAt its meeting on June 21, 2014, the Board of Trustees endorsed Susquehanna’s new strategic plan – Susquehanna 2020: Thriving at the Intersections of Mission and Market. This action was the culmination of more than a year of work by the Board and the Susquehanna community to articulate our institutional priorities moving forward.

While higher education is clearly in a period of disruption and change–from family income stagnation and changing demographics to the technological shifts of MOOCs, on-line competition, unbundling, etc.–our conclusion after studying the higher education landscape is that there are no “magic bullets” for Susquehanna University. We have concluded clearly and with strong consensus that our best course with regard to strategy is to, in effect, “double down” on our core competency–undergraduate education in a residential context.

To do this effectively, the plan places a heavy emphasis on nurturing a culture of experimentation and innovation. These proposals ask the Susquehanna community to think in new ways about what we do every day. The priorities and initiatives in the plan seek to align our mission and strengths with the needs and desires of the market. We believe this plan will move us in the direction that is needed at this time, while honoring the standards of excellence that are the hallmark of a Susquehanna education and providing the flexibility to adapt to changing circumstances.

My thanks to the entire campus community for all that you have done to make this plan possible and for all that you will do to help us realize its goals of enhancing student learning and success.
