Jewish Studies
The purpose of the Jewish Studies minor is to enable and enrich student knowledge of Jewish religion, literature, history and cultural diversity. The interdisciplinary curriculum provides a range of courses that facilitate student explorations of Judaism, Jewish experience, and Israel. The minor is open to those students in a wide variety of academic majors interested in broadening their perspectives about spirituality, ethnicity and culture.
Special events including lectures, films, art exhibitions and panel discussions complement Jewish studies courses. Recent examples include:
- “The Shoah and the Arts: Coming To Terms With Genocide,” a year-long focus on issues raised by the Shoah’s representation and reverberation in the arts
- Co-sponsoring “An Evening with Tony Kushner”
- Bringing the Nextbook nationwide book discussion series “Let's Talk About It: Jewish Literature - Identity and Imagination” to campus
- Co-sponsoring a Department of Music Masterworks Concert, “Ernest Bloch’s Sacred Service,” for Holocaust Remembrance Day
- Organizing “Water in the Middle East,” a major university event that featured an afternoon symposium, “Water in the Middle East: Policy, Law, and Culture,” and an evening presentation, “Water Partnerships: The Arava Institute for Environmental Studies (AIES) — A Working Model of How the Environment Can Be a Bridge to Cooperation in the Middle East.”
