Hunger of Memory by Richard Rodriquez

Hunger of Memory is the intellectual autobiography of Richard Rodriquez, the son of Mexican immigrants who began his education in Sacramento, California, knowing only 50 words of English, and concluded it in the grandeur of the British Museum. As described on its cover, Hunger of Memory is "the poignant journey of a scholarship boy whose awkward progress reveals the central mysteries of education, its costs – painful alienation from his working-class past – and its great gains, Rodriguez's achievement of a middle-class voice."
