Orchestral Program Overview
Susquehanna University is proud of its vibrant orchestral program, providing a broad range of standard repertoire opportunities for string players of all levels, pre-professional wind, brass, and percussionists, and singers who collaborate with the orchestras on operas and oratorios. Recent works performed have been Mussorgsky’s “Pictures at an Exhibition,” Brahms Symphony No. 1 and Sibelius Symphony No. 5
Overview of the Current Season
Susquehanna University Orchestra
By audition only. Open to advanced string players (both music majors and non-music majors) and high caliber wind/brass/percussionists. Hosts annual Concerto/Aria competition. Collaborates with Opera Studio and Choral Program on alternate years. Standard, professional-level orchestral repertoire. Jennifer Sacher Wiley, director
SU “Concert Drama” Orchestra
Selected from members of the SU Orchestra. Tours bi-annually to urban school districts with an original, educational, scripted program. Visit the Concert Drama website for a complete description of this unique extension of SU’s Music Education curriculum.
Susquehanna Strings
An intermediate-level string orchestra led by SU upperclass students, advised by Jennifer Sacher Wiley. This ensemble provides an excellent opportunity for undergraduate conductors to gain practical experience before student teaching. Ensemble members consist of SU string students, community students (grades 3-12), and music education majors. An informal audition is required.
