Prior to obtaining his Ph.D., Orwig worked for 13 years as a software engineer for Stenograph Corporation automating the shorthand machine that court reporters use. His research interests are business activity modeling for determining fitness of information systems to business activities and text analysis using neural network techniques to overcome information overload.

Orwig is currently involved in business activity modeling and activity-based costing research with local municipalities and companies supported by the Susquehanna Economic Development Association Council of Governments. He is also the principal investigator for a supplier excellence certification project involving a local company supported by Ben Franklin Technology Partners. He teaches E-Business Applications, Database Programming, Management Support Systems and Global Business Perspectives.
