Mine Fire Research Video
This is a animation of the movement of the coal fire from Centralia, Pa., from 1962 to 2009. The data used to produce this map was collected from bore hole data and aerial thermal infrared imagery. Professor Elick collected this remotely sensed data and integrated it into a map composed of layers. It shows how the fire location has changed over time, and it shows how the fire is moving in the subsurface toward the west.
