Shikellamy Marina Environmental Education Center

Marina Research CenterThe facility currently is being renovated and is scheduled to open in late 2013 as a state-of-the-art center for environmental research and education. It will house a classroom, dorm, office, laboratory and exhibition space. Owned by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR), it will house offices for the DCNR and Susquehanna River Heartland Consortium for Environmental Studies (SRHCES) as well as other collaborators. Susquehanna University is an active member of the SRHCES.


  • Located in Sunbury, Northumberland County, in Central Pennsylvania.
  • The facility is about a 25-minute drive from SU’s campus.
  • The Marina site is at the confluence of the East and West branches of the Susquehanna River, making it an ideal location for river studies. It is also near Penns Creek, Shamokin Creek, and Middle Creek confluences.
  • This field station is multifunctional, providing office, educational, research, and exhibition space to local governmental, educational, and non-profit organizations interested in studying and preserving the Susquehanna River as an important natural resource. The property is owned by the DCNR but is leased to the Susquehanna River Heartland Coalition for Environmental Studies (SRHCES), a consortium of researchers and educators from regional colleges and universities.

  • Docking and mooring areas for small boats and watercraft
  • A well-equipped research laboratory and separate room for processing samples
  • Collection room and secure areas for sampling and field equipment
  • A 64-seat classroom
  • DCNR and Susquehanna River Coalition office space
  • Additional office space to accommodate up to eight with copy equipment
  • Kitchen and dining areas
  • Eight two-person bunk beds in four rooms (accommodate 16 overnight guests, 4 per room)
  • Four bathrooms: two dorm bathrooms and two for office worker use
  • Large exhibit area for educational or conference use

Site Features

  • Easy access to riparian environments and a number of different order streams (2nd order to 10th order) with different physical, chemical and biological characteristics
  • Near a temporary inflatable dam that is removed and installed annually

Sample of Research and Educational Uses 

  • Monitor water quality in the Susquehanna River Lower West Branch (between Lock Haven and Sunbury)
  • Studying mercury content in area fish populations
  • Collect real-time river data in Lewisburg, Northumberland and Danville
  • Assess riparian buffer effectiveness along Chillisquaque Creek (near Montour Preserve)
  • Coordinate research activities of various non-profit, academic, and government organizations including, among others, Susquehanna University, Bloomsburg University, Lycoming College, Bucknell University, the DCNR, Bloomsburg University, King’s College and Geisinger Medical Center
