Prudential CEO to Present Weis Memorial Lecture
Published on February 27, 2014
John Strangfeld, chairman and CEO of Prudential Financial Inc. and chair of the Susquehanna University Board of Trustees, will deliver the university’s 2014 Sigmund Weis Memorial Lecture in Business on March 12. The lecture, titled “Life Ain’t Linear,” begins at 7:30 p.m. in Stretansky Concert Hall of the Cunningham Center for Music and Art.
During his interactive lecture, Strangfeld will share his thoughts on corporate evolution as well as personal evolution, illustrating the fact that the road to success is non-linear and that once achieved, there is no guarantee of retention. He will also engage the audience on the topics of personal brand and difference-making.
A 1975 graduate of Susquehanna University, Strangfeld earned a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration through the Sigmund Weis School of Business. He went on to attend the Darden School of Business at the University of Virginia, where he earned a master’s degree in business administration before joining Prudential in 1977.
Prior to being named Prudential’s chairman and CEO in 2008, Strangfeld served as Prudential’s vice chairman responsible for the corporation’s U.S. businesses, including both the investment and insurance divisions. Before this, he held a variety of senior investment positions within the United States and abroad, including six years in London.
A chartered financial analyst (CFA), Strangfeld is a member of the Financial Services Forum, the Geneva Association and the American Council of Life Insurers, and is co-chair of the board of directors for the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark, N.J.
Beyond his corporate responsibilities, Strangfeld remains very involved with both his alma maters. In addition to serving as board chair, Strangfeld initiated a coaching internship program at Susquehanna and presented the 2010 Edward S. and A. Rita Schmidt Lecture in Ethics. He is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Darden School Foundation. He also initiated, and is an ongoing sponsor of, a recruitment and scholarship program for military officers seeking to transition into leadership roles in civilian life by earning an MBA from Darden.
The Sigmund Weis Memorial Lecture is an endowed lectureship established in 1979 by Claire G. Weis in honor of her husband Sigmund Weis, co-founder of Weis Pure Food Stores Inc. and a 1903 Susquehanna graduate. The lectureship brings prominent persons from business and public life to the campus to speak on matters of interest to the university and the area business community.
