Environmental

Environmental chemistry is the study of chemical and biochemical processes that occur in the natural environment, and the impact of human interference air, soil and water.  It is an interdisciplinary science that requires an understanding of soil, aquatic and atmospheric chemistry, as well analytical chemistry.

The research of Christopher Janzen, Ph.D., on the soils at the site of Pennsylvania’s Centralia mine fire—an ongoing underground fire—provides an example of environmental chemistry in action.
