Gilmer’s theatre, opera and dance credits include Pittsburgh Playwright’s Theatre, Point Park University’s Playhouse Jr., Point Park Dance Company, Virginia Arts Festival in Norfolk, City Theatre of Pittsburgh, Opera Theatre of Pittsburgh, Bucknell University Theatre, Bucknell Dance Company, Philadelphia Shakespeare Festival, Walnut Street Theatre, the Lantern Theatre Company of Philadelphia, Philadelphia’s University of the Arts, Arden Theatre Company, Everyman Theatre Company of Baltimore, Morgan State University, Huntington Theatre Company of Boston, Boston’s Midsummer Opera, Alliance Theatre in Atlanta, and Maine’s Monadnock Music Festival. In 2009 Gilmer won the African American Council of the Arts Award for Best Costume Design for August Wilson’s Seven Guitars.
Gilmer serves as the costume and makeup designer for the departmental theatre productions. She also serves as the costume shop manager, mentors the student costume designers for the student one acts and supervises costume and makeup run crews. Gilmer teaches Costume Design and Costume Production, Stage Makeup and Wigs, Understanding Theatre and Perspectives. Her research interests include costume and fashion history, fabric modification (dyeing and painting), millinery and mask design and construction.
Gilmer holds an M.F.A. in theatre with an emphasis in costume design from Boston University.
