Smyth joined the faculty in Fall 2008. His areas of expertise and research interest include the sociology of law, punishment and penality, sex, sexuality and social control, and social change. His work in these areas has focused on a range of empirical topics, including cultural models of sexual violence in U.S. carceral facilities and the social construction of the “homosexual male” in “gay-panic” homicide trials. In addition to his recently published book, Prison Rape: Law, Media, and Meaning (2011), Smyth's work has appeared in Law & Society Review and Stanford Law and Policy Review, as well as the forthcoming Oxford Handbook on Sex, Gender, and Crime.

Smyth teaches courses in sociological theory, crime and justice, sociology of law, corrections and punishment, and social problems. In addition to his research and teaching pursuits, he currently serves as director of the Arlin M. Adams Center for Law and Society at SU and he was recently appointed to the Research, Evaluation, Data Collection and Analysis Advisory Committee of the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency.
