Bearer is a Taiwanese native that grew up speaking both Mandarin Chinese and Taiwanese or Minnan Hua, a local dialect that is widely spoken in southern Fujian Province in China. She holds a bachelor's degree in English literature from Tamkang University in Taiwan and a master's degree in curriculum & teaching from Michigan State University, with a focus on second language acquisition.
Since her immigration to the U.S. in 2004, she has served as a university-level language instructor teaching ESL and Mandarin Chinese to non-native speakers. Currently, she is an adjunct faculty member of Susquehanna University and Harrisburg Area Community College, as well as a visiting faculty member at Gettysburg College.
Though Bearer was born and raised in Taiwan, she has had opportunities to travel and work in mainland China, which has benefited her tremendously in teaching various aspects of Mandarin Chinese and culture. In her spare time, she also works as a Chinese/English Interpreter (independent interpretation services, volunteering at federal prisons and as ESPN’s Chinese interpreter for the Little League World Series).
