Martin is a Professor of Spanish with major experience in Spanish American studies. She studied and lived for extended periods of time in Colombia and Mexico and has done extensive work with Spanish speaking residents of the United States. At Susquehanna, she has developed the Latino Initiative, a broad ranging program of events that includes the annual Latino Symposium, now in its 18th year, and the service-learning course which connects the University to regional Latino residents.

Martin has published widely on the 19th-century Spanish "mujer de letras" and international traveler Emilia Serrano de Wilson. Her most recent article appeared in the book Viajeras entre dos mundos (EFGD, Brazil. 2012.).
