Schurer teaches most levels of German and enjoys adapting upper-level courses to the university themes. Her research areas have included Pennsylvania German culture and Arabic-German literature but she is interested in all aspects of contemporary Germany, especially Germany's role in the European Union. She currently serves as the book review editor for the Yearbook of the Society for German-American Studies.
