I’ve volunteered at Gettysburg National Military Park with my family for more than a decade. Since coming to Susquehanna, I’ve been able to take that to a whole new level.

That’s why I chose Susquehanna. I knew the university shared my commitment to volunteerism and encouraged students to “engage the world.”

Twice a year, I lead a group of my Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity brothers and alumni to Gettysburg to help maintain the park. We work to preserve the legacy of those who fought in the Civil War. We are one of the largest groups of volunteers at Gettysburg, and we would like to keep growing by recruiting other volunteers from Susquehanna.

Recently, we helped clean up several areas of the park, including the area near Pickett’s Charge—where Union soldiers repelled Confederate attacks in a pivotal battle. A group of about 30 of us spent four hours clearing brush, trees and trash. At the end of the day, we had several huge piles of debris. It is rewarding to know that we are helping save a critical piece of history. We also have adopted the Soldiers and Sailors of the Confederacy Memorial.

At Susquehanna, I’m majoring in history and minoring in secondary education. I want to become a teacher and share my love of the Civil War with future generations. I want to help ensure that we never forget the price of freedom and the countless sacrifices that have made our nation what it is today.
