Getting involved at Susquehanna is a great way to meet people and explore the many different aspects of the university. There is a group or organization for everyone, and they are always looking for new members because they bring a fresh perspective and new ideas to the table.
When you get involved with student activities, you to learn things you could never learn inside the classroom. Going to school isn't just about learning a particular field of study. It’s about rounding yourself as an individual and expanding your horizons. Getting involved in student organizations provides an excellent platform to develop new skills and build on your current abilities.
Clubs and organizations also provide opportunities for leadership, and are great for developing time management, personal interaction, decisions making and responsibility skills. Being a part of leadership teams in campus organizations have allowed me to network with other students, meet faculty and staff and become involved with the business of the university. I think the leadership positions I’ve held will be invaluable as I move into the job market or on to a graduate program.
I have a lot of diverse interests, so I’m involved in a number of campus activities. Some support my career goals, like the Susquehanna University Sustainability Committee. Others offer fraternity and service, like Tau Kappa Epsilon. Then some activities are pure fun, like the Ultimate Frisbee Club.
In 2012 I spent the entire summer working at Susquehanna, coordinating the Get Into Volunteer Experiences (SU GIVE) program. SU GIVE is a volunteer day that every first-year student participates in as part of their orientation week. It’s a good way for new students to get to know each other and to understand the service mission of the university.
I always encourage first-year students to break out of their shell and join a campus organization. Susquehanna students that get involved get the most out of their college experience. Everyone here is part of one big family and sometimes you forget you are on a college campus and not hanging out on your couch at home.
