Medical Humanities Initiative
The field of medical humanities fosters interdisciplinary inquiries in medicine. In its broadest terms, medical humanities applies the following interdisciplinary fields to medical education and practice:
Humanities – literature, philosophy, history, religion
Social sciences – anthropology, cultural studies, psychology, sociology, medicine
Arts – theatre, visual arts, music
The goal of medical humanities is to explore how humanities disciplines illuminate the nature and practice of medicine. Scholars in this field integrate scientific understandings of physical nature with humanistic explorations of experience.
The Susquehanna University Medical Humanities Initiative brings together faculty and students to discuss the possibilities of such work. Faculty members present original research that highlights various analytical approaches to health and the body. In addition, students are provided a forum in which to engage with scholarly work and to present their own research.
