SUMMER 2011 ACTIVITIES:

I am working at Harsco's World Headquarters in Camp Hill, Pa., for their tech services. While there I am responsible for setting up and maintaining site network filestructures, access rights, network security, network users, network printing and desktop user environments. I also am responsible for setting up and maintaining network servers and troubleshooting and repairing problems with the site network, telephone infrastructure and systems.

As a high school student growing up in central Pennsylvania, I always sought out activities that benefited my community and individuals. Being able to continue to help others influenced my decision to attend Susquehanna University.

As a volunteer firefighter for two local fire companies, I train for several hours each week and run calls when needed. My first fully involved fire came just two weeks after joining Selinsgrove’s Dauntless Hook & Ladder Co. The fire was out in the country, so many people came to help. It showed how the community can come together for a common cause.

I also am on call in another area—computer repair—both on and off campus. I started working on student and faculty computers through the Office of Information Technology. And then I branched out to start my own small business. I help people in the Selinsgrove area with computer issues—everything from virus problems to hardware and software issues.

Through the Global Business Perspectives course, I’ve enjoyed being able to coach first-year business majors in the introductory Global Business Perspectives course. You’re assigned a team of four students that has a business case study to analyze. You help them get started, make sure the work is evenly divided, and set up roles for each student. During the last two weeks, we kick into high gear—meeting every night and focusing on practicing their final presentation to business execs. The experience gives the team and me real teamwork and leadership experience.
