In 1971, the Pennsylvania legislature established the
Higher Education Equal Opportunity Program (Act 101). This
program makes post-secondary education possible for undergraduate
students whose economic, educational, and cultural backgrounds
might limit their success in achieving their career and life
goals. Through a program of counseling, tutoring, curricular
innovation, and cultural enrichment activities, students
develop as campus leaders and graduate with marketable skills.
Such outcomes demonstrate that Act 101 works!
Since 1971, more than 306,000 Pennsylvania citizens have
been assisted by Act 101, and more education equates to higher
earnings. According to the U. S. Census Bureau (July 2002),
people who attend some college can expect work-life earnings
of approximately 45% more than for high school graduates.
For those who complete college, lifetime earnings will be
nearly twice as much as for workers with only a high school
diploma. |
