How to Apply: International Students

International Students Are Welcome to Apply to Susquehanna University

We receive hundreds of inquiries and applications for admission every year from around the world, and appreciate your interest in what Susquehanna has to offer an international student. If you would like to be placed on our mailing lists, please complete the Foreign Student Preliminary Application form or the online inquiry request on this Web site. You may apply for admission online without charge via this Web site or the Common Application, or request a paper form be sent to you via airmail.

The deadline for applications for admission and scholarship consideration is the March 1 before the August in which you hope to enroll. Admission and scholarship decisions are typically made in early April. All academically qualified applicants must certify they have adequate funding to cover their educational costs before Susquehanna University will fully accept them for admission. The admission committee will review scholastic credentials but will make a final decision only when financial support is verified. You may wait till the scholarship committee has chosen the international scholarship awardee before submitting your financial statements. As noted below, these financial documents will have to prove you have AT LEAST US $10500 available for educational expenses.

Each year, the Scholarship committee awards renewable international student scholarships based on academic talent. Our scholarships are offered for Fall term entrance and only rarely is funding available for new Spring term enrollment. Preference is given to freshman applicants with no prior university experience. The biggest scholarship covers tuition only, which means the recipient must be responsible for fees, room, meals, transportation, books, and other expenses which typically total more than US $10500 per year. This scholarship is the largest amount the university awards; other academic scholarships range up to US $15000 per year. Occasionally, smaller offers are made to top transfer applicants based on GPAs. We do not administer any financial aid programs for international students. International students may apply for employment on campus but would not be eligible for US federal work-study jobs.

International applicants must show a strong college preparation from secondary school and the ability to succeed in an English language environment. We ask for an official high school transcript of grade results and/or national exam scores, an official TOEFL or SAT-1 score report, a personal essay, and letters of recommendation from school and/or university administrators and teachers. A score of 80 (Internet-based), 213 (computerized), or 550 (paper) on TOEFL is considered adequate. In the case of a transfer applicant, we also would need an official transcript from the university and descriptions of the courses completed. While our primary concern is academic ability, the Admission and Scholarship committees also want to see evidence you have been involved in extra- and co-curricular activity. We are looking for candidates who will participate in campus life at Susquehanna as well as succeed in class.

Susquehanna University International Student Scholarship

Each year, one tuition scholarship is awarded to a new foreign student. The recipient is that individual whose application is determined by the Admissions committee to be the strongest in terms of past academic and social achievement, potential for continued success on the college level, and demonstrated financial need. The award is renewable annually based upon maintenance of satisfactory social and academic standards throughout the normal course of study towards the Bachelor's Degree. Students with no prior college education receive first priority consideration.

The scholarship award covers tuition only. It does not include the cost of room, board (meals), fees, travel, books, school supplies, personal needs, clothing, laundry, recreation, or living expenses during vacation periods. Students must be prepared to meet these costs with their own funds. Those unable to afford these expenses will not be considered for the scholarship.
