Majors, Minors and Programs: It's Okay to Be Undecided About a Major

Class on Bogar Lawn

Undecided about a major? You're not alone. About one-third of our first-year class arrive undecided. Here are a few tips to help you benefit from college as a time of options and discovery.

  • Take advantage of the opportunities presented in Core curriculum courses. They can be a chance to study something which you might find interesting and help you discover your strengths and skills.
  • Look for classes that will sharpen important skills. Consider furthering your knowledge in computers, a foreign language, public speaking and informative/persuasive writing.
  • Talk to students and faculty in the departments that you find interesting. Read any brochures and catalog information that will tell you more about the program(s).
  • Remember your college's career planning services can help you explore your options.
  • Get involved in campus activities. These will provide you with leadership opportunities and a lot of connections. You may discover a hidden talent that could lead you to a career choice!
  • Plan at least one internship and/or travel abroad experience. While you may not have picked a major, these experiences can make a difference in what path you do choose.
  • Meet with key resource people. Your favorite faculty member, the career counselors, your advisor or the registrar are always good "sounding boards" and may have advice and career information for you.
  • Realize that you are not limited to one course of study. Think about major/minor combinations, self-designed majors and interdisciplinary majors that fit your interests, then go for it!
