History
and Symbols
Alpha
Delta Pi was founded on May 15, 1851, at Wesleyan Female College in Macon
Georgia. It was the very first secret society created for college
women and is therefore, regarded as "First and Finest."
Our
Founders

The
six original founders of The Adelphean Society where Eugenia
Tucker
Fitzgerald, Ella Pierce Turner, Octavia Andrew Rush, Mary Evans
Glass,
Elizabeth Williams Mitchell, and Sophronia Woodruff Dews.
The
original name of the sorority was the "Adelphean Society." The word "Adelphean"
is derived from the Greek word meaning sister. In 1904 the members of the
Adelphean Society voted to become national and in 1905 changed their name
to Alpha Delta Phi. In 1913 it was changed to Alpha Delta Pi because of
continued confusion with a men's fraternity of the same name. Throughout
its history, Alpha Delta Pi has always stood for the same ideals which
we share through a sisterhood throughout the nation. Alpha Delta Pi has
135 chapters
in
the United States and Canada.

Badge
Our badge is gold with a black enamel center.
The Greek letters "ADP", two stars, and clasped hands are the symbols on the badge. The badge is
the outward, visible symbol or our lifetime loyalty to Alpha Delta Pi. The first badge was worn by
the Adelpheans in 1851. The badge has undergone many changes over the years. The correct way to wear the badge is over the heart
with no other pin (fraternity or honorary) placed above it.
Coat of Arms
The original Coat of Arms
was designed by Elizabeth Moseley Coles and Agnes Chapman. Symbolism from our ritual and our Alpha
pin were combined in the Coat of Arms and the design originally had a background of violets. In
1919 the Convention body voted to make changes and the present design was accepted.
Magazine
The Adelphean
is the national publication of Alpha Delta Pi that keeps members all over the world
updated on the latest happenings of Alpha Delta Pi.
