  Dear Friends,

President L. Jay Lemons

As I reflect on my first full academic year at Susquehanna, I am struck by the joy and honor of being part of this community committed to preparing young people to make a positive difference in the world.

In the pages that follow, you will read much about the accomplishments and challenges of this extraordinary year. Another year of record enrollments, an engaged and dedicated faculty, and enthusiastic students ready to learn all contribute to the sense of momentum and excitement of the Susquehanna community.

The annual report also focuses on the valuable role student-faculty research plays in both the educational process and the quest for new knowledge, and it explores the many contributions diversity brings to our intellectual community.

As we embarked on a new strategic planning process, we were intensely engaged throughout the year in thinking openly and creatively about the ways in which Susquehanna will continue to provide students the highest quality undergraduate experience possible. I feel very excited about the product of those deliberations. Our draft Statement of Strategic Vision and Themes includes key commitments to strengthening intellectual engagement and to building community - two priorities that promise a wealth of possibilities for the future.

We have learned much this year in the wake of the shock and tragedy of September 11 and the deaths of two young alumni, Colleen Supinski and Chris Vialonga, in the World Trade Center collapse. The year also brought the loss of many others so dear to our community - including Sachiko Presser, Winifred Shaheen, Alice Ann Patterson Jacobs, and Neil Potter.

Such losses have helped us all to appreciate what we have: enthusiastic faculty, talented students, alumni who so ably demonstrate the outcomes of a Susquehanna education, and benefactors whose generosity has enabled us to nurture people and programs in a beautiful campus setting with superb facilities.

My heartfelt thanks to our students, faculty, staff, alumni, friends, board members and volunteers for all you do to distinguish Susquehanna.

Sincerely,

L. Jay Lemons
President
