Dear Friends,
As fall progresses, we welcome the new class of 2007 and incoming faculty, and with them, the excitement of new voices and perspectives that breathe life into our campus community. The Blough-Weis Library weathervane shown on the cover of this year's annual report is a treasured landmark for our campus. The arrow also symbolizes the beginning of another important year for Susquehanna -- the year we will embark on a strategic plan that reflects our commitment and vision for the next five years and beyond. The words on our cover reflect many of our planning priorities. This is also the year we will complete preparations for an upcoming 2004 accreditation review by the Middle States Association of Schools and Colleges. Together these projects have provided a rich opportunity to examine carefully the residential liberal arts college experience we provide and to determine what is best about a Susquehanna education and what we can do better. In the pages that follow, you will read much about our goals to increase intellectual engagement and create an even more cohesive Susquehanna community. Our priorities include strengthening the common experience of our students, increasing and sustaining diversity, and fostering the communication, collaboration, and creativity that are the marks of a truly great educational institution. Our plan also addresses the critical resources it will take to accomplish these goals. A second theme in this report focuses on the faculty -- the absolute lifeblood of an institution of higher learning such as ours. Susquehanna is blessed to have a senior faculty rich in wisdom, experience, and knowledge. We are also blessed with more recently arrived faculty who have brought their own new perspectives in teaching and learning. Our story about a recent faculty search illustrates the extraordinary care that Susquehanna devotes to insure that our faculty are not only talented and enthusiastic but also dedicated to sharing that talent and enthusiasm with undergraduates. Outstanding faculty, along with equally dedicated members of the staff and board of directors, generous alumni, and friends, work together to help prepare our students for lives of achievement, leadership, and service. Thank you to all who have done so much in the past year to help create and share the vision of the future that will make Susquehanna a national model for undergraduate education. Sincerely,
|
