***A College Fair Thank You***

Thank you to everyone who volunteered at a college fair this fall. We had a very successful college fair season, and your time and efforts are greatly appreciated. Please be on the lookout for the Adopt-A-Student program within the next few months, and remember that if you did not get to cover a college fair in the fall, don't worry, we will have a complete college fair schedule ready for the spring as well!

A Word from Sean

I'm not really sure where the "A Word from Sean" section came about, because it was not in The Pipeline during my first year, and I don't know that I ever really consulted anyone about whether or not it was okay for me to freely share whatever it is I am thinking or feeling about the university, (or if anyone really cared to hear my opinions for that matter...) I guess that as I wrote and compiled information and stories about APAN and what was happening on campus each month, I decided I wanted to have my own voice heard in the midst of those stories and events. Whether it is justified or has merit I don't know, but I like and appreciate the freedom I have been given in this section to express myself, and because I love SU and all that goes on here, most of what I am sharing is generally a little funny and a little goofy too.

This month I'd like to be both serious and succinct. Our university community has struggled with the deaths of three students since July: Justin Miller '08, Katie Kasinecz '07, and Bob Murphy '07. It has been a difficult and at times surreal semester for our tightly-knit community, and it has left us with many with important questions about our lives and their meaning and thinking about what we take for granted each day. We are grateful for having had these three remarkable people, all outstanding leaders and citizens, on our campus, and their impact will long be felt and never forgotten. I knew all three and am so thankful for that opportunity. I am also thankful for and proud of how our community has responded. In trying times we have come together and grown stronger. The Residence Life staff in particular has been incredibly generous of time and spirit, and have really shined when their guidance has been needed the most. The administrators and faculty have also been understanding and empathetic, always there for students when needed. Even in tragedy, the strength and love of our community becomes all the clearer.

I wish you all happy, safe, healthy holidays, but ask that you not forget the Miller, Kasinecz, and Murphy families in your thoughts and prayers this next month, that they have peace and hope, and that they know the love that we extend to them.

The Kasinecz family is creating a $25,000 scholarship in Katie's name to award to a worthy SU student. They are about halfway to their goal, and any donations would both help and bring comfort during this time. Donations can be mailed to Pamela Weeks, Box 1852, 514 University Avenue, Selinsgrove, PA 17870 and checks should be made out to: The Katie Kasinecz Scholarship Fund. Thank you.

APAN Member of the Month
(The APAN Member of the Month section highlights individual APAN members who have contributed significantly to the expansion and success of APAN over the past few years.)

The December APAN Members of the Month are Katy McFarland and Jeff Orlando, both members of the Class of 2000. Katy and Jeff have been incredibly giving of their time over the past four years, often covering several fairs throughout the fall...and several more throughout the spring. We thank Jeff and Katy for all of their hard work and appreciate all of their efforts. Congratulations!

SU Holds Annual Christmas Candlelight Service

SU held its annual Christmas Candlelight Service on Tuesday, Dec. 6 in Weber Chapel Auditorium. One of Susquehanna's most cherished traditions, the annual candlelight service includes candle lighting and carols, as well as traditional readings, songs and prayers in celebration of the season. University chaplain, the Rev. Mark Wm. Radecke, presides over the service, assisted by the Rev. Ted Keating, pastor of St. Pius X Church and spiritual advisor to Susquehanna's Catholic community. Music is provided by Susquehanna University’s Festival Choir (the combined University Choir and Chorale), Chamber Singers, Handbell Choir and Brass Quintet, as well as university organist and Professor of Music Susan Hegberg.

In conjunction with the service, SUN Council sponsored its annual food drive, collecting canned goods and personal care items for the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank. They also collected children’s athletic shoes and socks for victims of Hurricane Katrina, which will be donated to children in schools near the Mandeville, La., area, where a team of 20 student workers and four faculty and staff chaperones will stay during a week-long service trip in January, (see below).

SU Faculty Featured in Television Special

Two Susquehanna University faculty were recently featured in the public broadcast documentary, Looking to the River. Produced by WVIA-TV, the one-hour documentary examines critical contemporary issues pertaining to the Susquehanna River’s Middle Basin, and their connection to the history and heritage of the river and its 27,000 square-mile watershed. Contributing their expertise to the documentary are Donald Housley, Charles B. Degenstein professor emeritus of history, and Jack Holt, professor of biology. Housley provides viewers with information about the history of river communities and their association with the river, and Holt discusses the microscopic communities, particularly diatoms, which inhabit the river.

Housley holds a Ph. D. from Pennsylvania State University. His research interests are in the social history of the United States, and he is currently writing a history of Susquehanna University. Housley retired after the 2003-2004 academic year but continues to supervise student research and internships. Holt received his Ph.D. from the University of Oklahoma. His courses include systematic biology, limnology and phycology. His research interests include the ecology and biology of freshwater algae.

After a number of interviews over the last year, Looking to the River premiered on December 2 and has aired several times since. The production combines narration by an on-camera storyteller with an authoritative range of documentary content, entertaining dramatizations, high-resolution satellite images and cinematography to convey the Susquehanna River’s timeless value and shared memories as the foundation for creating economic and environmental advantage for the region. The production also employs an acoustic and orchestral soundtrack to complement the exquisite seasonal footage, including aerial vistas and waterline perspectives of life and lore along Susquehanna’s shores. The documentary will continue to air, so keep a lookout in your area!

SU Students, Faculty Prepare for Trip to Gulf Coast

Twenty SU students and four faculty and staff members will travel to Mandeville, Louisiana for a week In January where they will work through a host church to assist with disaster recovery efforts. The Rev. Mark Wm. Radecke, who has led service learning trips to Nicaragua and Costa Rica for several years, organized the trip to Mandeville, which is about 27 miles from New Orleans on the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain.

“One of our core values is to serve others. As the nation has quickly and generously reached out to the affected area, we have tried to understand where Susquehanna can add the greatest value,” said President Lemons. “The answers emerging on campus suggest that we are in this for the long haul.”

A follow-up trip during spring break in March is also anticipated, as are service trips to the region for years to come.

The mission trips are being supported in part through the Susquehanna University Fund (SUF). SUF donors may designate a portion of or their entire gift to Susquehanna to help fund student teams who will travel to the Gulf Coast . I

“The hurricanes have also touched the Susquehanna family in much more personal ways,” said Lemons. Several alumni who lived in affected areas have shared their stories through the university Web sitewww.sualum.com. Sophomore Jonathan Snyder, of Gordon, PA , was called up by his Pennsylvania National Guard unit to serve victims of Hurricane Katrina and has been stationed in Louisiana since early September. His primary mission has been to help distribute food and water to people in need in New Orleans , although he has also traveled to more distant distribution centers to monitor supplies and safety. “We know from his mother that Jonathan's days are long, often beginning at 5 a.m. and not ending until midnight . She shared with us that he has long been committed to making a difference in the lives of others, and that she is proud of him. So are we.”

“History suggests that as a nation, we have a short attention span when it comes to disasters such as this. But I believe we at Susquehanna have begun to seize on the opportunities that are only now really beginning to emerge to help deliver assistance. And, what better way to teach our students than to reach out to people who will need help in a rebuilding effort that will take years,” Lemons said.

In Case You Missed it...

SU Football to Move to Liberty League in 2007

Starting with the 2007 season, the Crusader football team has a new home: the Liberty League. Susquehanna will make its Liberty League debut on Sept. 8, 2007, when the Crusaders travel to Schenectady, N.Y., to play Union College. While the Crusaders will continue to compete in the Middle Atlantic Conference in 2006 , the new move has many on campus excited.

“Susquehanna is delighted to receive this invitation and is pleased to be aligning itself with the distinguished members of the Liberty League. We believe that the academic characteristics and athletics values of the Liberty League institutions are a superb match for those ideals we hold dear here at Susquehanna,” said President Lemons. “We also welcome this opportunity to strengthen our presence in New York and New England , where we have significant numbers of alumni and, as a result, have begun to draw more students.”

“Today's announcement is great for both our program and Susquehanna as a whole,” said head coach Steve Briggs. “I look forward to leading the program into this exciting new era of Crusader football.” Briggs noted that the Liberty League has historically been a strong football conference. As of October 24, the Division III national rankings have Hobart (#23) in the top 25, with Union and RPI among other schools receiving votes.

The Liberty League was formed in 1995 as the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association, and sponsors championships in 24 sports including football. In a 2004 press release announcing the name change from the UCAA to the Liberty League, the conference stressed that “(t)he member institutions seek to establish and maintain an environment in which a student-athlete's athletic activities are conducted as an integral part of the educational experience.” The Liberty League football membership includes Hobart College, St. Lawrence University, the University of Rochester, Union College, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and he United States Merchant Marine Academy. Non-football-playing members of the Liberty League are Clarkson University, Hamilton College, Skidmore College, Vassar College, and William Smith College.

A decision has not yet been made regarding the conference affiliation of Susquehanna's other 22 varsity sports. The Crusaders have the option of remaining in the Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Corporation through the 2007-2008 academic year.

SU to Join New Athletic Conference

On the heels of the SU football program’s move to the Liberty League, SU announced on Tuesday that it will be a charter member of a newly formed NCAA Division III athletics conference. The members of the new conference will compete in all sports other than football. The conference, yet to be named, will begin competition in the fall of 2007. Other than SU, the other institutions forming the new conference are Catholic University, Washington, D.C.; Drew University, Madison, N.J.; Goucher College, Baltimore, Md.; Juniata College, Huntingdon, Pa.; Moravian College, Bethlehem, Pa.; Stevens Institute of Technology, Hoboken, N.J.; and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, N.Y.

In a joint statement, presidents of the above institutions outlined the purpose and character of the new conference: “In forming an affiliation with this new conference, we have affirmed a shared focus on institutional excellence that emphasizes our academic mission and a belief that athletics competition is an important component of the undergraduate experience.”

“ Susquehanna University is pleased to align with a group of institutions that share a common vision of quality undergraduate education combined with a commitment to a positive experience for student-athletes,” said President Lemons. “We are looking forward to a strong collaborative relationship with our new conference colleagues both athletically and academically.”

Presidents of the eight member institutions indicated that work had begun on a full range of organizational activities related to the formation of a new conference, including the articulation of conference philosophy, drafting and adoption of governing by-laws, petition for NCAA recognition, staffing and organization of conference offices, and establishment of operating and financial procedures.

SU athletic teams will continue to participate in their current conferences through spring 2007.

Jim Reed Honored as Women's DIII Coach of the Month

SU head women's basketball coach Jim Reed was honored by Women's DIII News as its Coach of the Month for the month of November after leading the Crusaders to victories in his first three games as the team's head coach. During the month of November, the Crusaders allowed an average of 44 points per game and held opponents to 31.7 percent shooting from the field in their four victories.

Reed subsequently has guided the Crusaders to a 6-1 start. The Crusader women won the opening weekend Pepsi-Weis Tip-Off Tournament hosted by SU, also beat Lincoln University, Juniata, Penn College, and Wilkes. The 6-1 tally is the best start ever by a first-year Susquehanna head coach and the team's best start since opening the 1999-00 season with a 5-0 record.

Reed, who served as an assistant coach in both the men's and women's programs during the early 1990s, returned to Susquehanna in September after four seasons as head coach at Wilkes University. He also serves as the head coach of the Women’s Golf team.

The Crusaders will be back in action on Saturday when they host Muhlenberg at 1:00 p.m. at O.W. Houts Gymnasium.
