A WORD FROM CHRISTINA
It has been very busy around campus with many events happening. A successful parents weekend has passed and finals are soon approaching, but first we get a feast of all feasts, Thanksgiving Dinner. Thanksgiving dinner is the time we get to relax and enjoy our meal while faculty and staff become our servers! I have attended this event since I was a freshman and would not miss it, because it is such an exciting time and a good time to get to possibly meet faculty or staff that may not be in your major. This event has become so popular that two different dinner times are needed ( 4:30 and 6:00 p.m.). Eating a last good meal with friends is the best thing for me before we leave for break. We all know that after break will begin the all anticipated final exams!
Happy Thanksgiving!
ADMISSIONS NEWS
A WORD FROM CHRIS MARKLE, Director of Admissions
While it is quite early in the cycle, admissions signals to date are positive. As of 11/20, applications for the Susquehanna Class of 2011 are up 27% compared to application figures last year, and we’ve attracted more students to campus for personal interviews and tours. Our Action Day and Fall Open House numbers have also been strong.
APAN efforts are a key reason why we’re off to such a strong start this year! Thanks so much for all that you are doing to help us achieve our goals of 2,700 applications and 565 new first-year students.
We are accepting applications until March 1, so if you have prospective students in mind who have yet to apply, please encourage them to be in contact with the admissions office.
Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family !
APPLICATION DEADLINE REMINDERS
Monday, January 1, 2007 : Early Decision II Application Deadline
Thursday, March 1, 2006 : Regular Decision Application Deadline
Please remember that while most schools have their regular decision deadline in early January, our regular decision deadline is not until March 1st! Remind prospective students of this date, and encourage them to apply if they have yet to do so. With that said, many students will want to finish their SU applications in time for early January, so please offer any help and assistance that you can, and do not forget to use your fee waiver cards if you still have them!
APAN NEWS
FALL COLLEGE FAIRS, TABLE BANNERS & COLLEGE FAIR HANDBOOK
The fall college fair season is now over! Thank you to everyone who helped APAN cover over 70 fairs this fall. We realize how busy the beginning of the school year can be, so we truly appreciate your time and commitment to the SU community.
If you have yet to do so, please remember to fill out your College Fair Evaluation Form on the APAN Web site or on the hard copy provided in each package.
Additionally, if you received a table banner and a college fair handbook in your package, make sure that you return it to the Office of Admissions in the provided envelope. We are currently missing approximately 10 banners and 15 handbooks... if you have one please return it to us as soon as possible, or if there is a problem in returning it, please e-mail us at APAN@susqu.edu! I know the handbooks are convenient to have and are pretty, but supplies are very limited – the handbook is posted on the APAN Web site for review. Thank you.
APAN ADOPT-A-STUDENT PROGRAM
The time has come for Admissions to start reading applications and accepting students. With that said, one of APAN’s most influential programs will soon be underway – our Adopt-a-Student program. The Adopt-a-Student program gives an accepted student the opportunity to speak and develop a relationship with someone who has had first hand Susquehanna experience. Many times, this direct contact with an alumnus is all a student needs to make a decision ...and is much appreciated by our accepted students and their families. The APAN member is matched with up to 10 accepted students according to major, special interests, or geographic area, and is asked to make contact via the telephone or email.
More information will be provided closer to the program’s launch in January. If you are not already a part of this program and are interested, please contact us at APAN@susqu.edu or motto@susqu.edu for more details. Thank you.
REFER A PROSPECTIVE STUDENT
The referral service is a continuous program within APAN. We find this program to be very beneficial to us and the prospective student, as your recommendations are valued through out the application process, including the actual admissions decision. We appreciate you getting to know prospective student thus and encouraging them to apply. It is my goal this year to report back to you about the status of students you have referred..
Please be sure to send us the names of any rising high school sophomores, juniors or seniors who you think would make good Susquehanna students. Submit the student's name on-line at https://www.susqu.edu/admissions/inquiry/so we may send them information.
Please be sure to include your name at the bottom of the inquiry for tracking purposes and feedback.
APAN WEB SITE UPDATE
We would like to remind you that all of the materials you receive via mail will also be available through links on our Web site, http://www.susqu.edu/apan/. A PDF version of the APAN manual is available to view and print on the APAN Web site. If you have not already visited our new site, please take a moment to view – keep in mind that we are continually making updates and improvements and that many key aspects of the program are now run on the Web site. Members can update their personal information, refer a prospective student, submit their College Night Evaluation form, and read their favorite monthly newsletter, The Pipeline!
Photo Gallery: A new feature to the Web site is a photo gallery. We would love to capture APAN in action; however, our photos are very limited. Please send us photos of you attending a college fair, speaking with prospective students, conversing with APAN or other college representatives, or even just a picture of …you! Please include names, the event, location, and any other information you may want us to know about the picture.
ACTION DAYS - Admissions Recruitment Event
Susquehanna’s Action Days were a big hit this fall. Over 400 students attended one of 5 programs highlighting Arts, Business, Liberal Arts, Science and Writing. Susquehanna is unique among colleges in offering prospective students an opportunity to spend two hours with professors in a variety of creative and interactive workshops. Many of these students apply and eventually enroll at Susquehanna. In addition to working with a professor, prospective students participate in “Taking Charge of your Career Direction," an engaging workshop that gets students thinking about career choices.
Business in Action Day, on Monday, October 9, consisted of information sessions for students interested in Accounting, Business, Economics, Finance, Information Systems, Marketing or Management. Students could explore Apfelbaum Hall and also had sessions with numerous business professors.
Science in Action Day, on Friday, October 20, allowed students interested in science to conduct experiments with student and faculty involved with Biochemistry, Earth and Environmental Sciences, Health Care and Exercise Physiology, Mathematics and Computer Sciences, Microbiology, Physical Chemistry and Physics.
Writing in Action Day, on Monday, October 23 consisted of workshops led by the writing department professors and students on College Writing, Creative Non-Fiction, Critical Non-Fiction, Fiction, Film and Writing, Journalism, Poetry, Science Fiction Writing and TV Production and Writing.
Arts in Action Day, on Monday, October 30, included workshops with the faculty involved with the Creative and Fine Arts. Lastly, Liberal Arts in Action Day, on Monday, November 6, workshops were offered from a broader range, including Broadcasting, Economics, Education, History, Political Science, Pre Law, Psychology, and Public Relations.
Action Days have been offered for over 20 years, starting with Science Action in 1985. These programs are a great way for prospective students to learn more about the academic offerings here at Susquehanna. Online registration for the 2007 Action Days will be available by mid July 2007. Please encourage those prospective students you meet to attend one of these days.
EVENTS ON CAMPUS
Homecoming 2006
“Changing Lives, Building Futures” was the theme for this year’s homecoming which kicked off Saturday, September 30. This year’s homecoming was combined with Alumni Weekend which made it a bigger event than usual. There were many moments reflecting on the day’s theme which have all made a dramatic impact on both the SU community and its future.
Perhaps the most dramatic announcement of the day was a gift presented by 1968 graduates Barry and Denise Horton Jackson, of Annapolis, Md., to three unsuspecting Susquehanna students. For seniors Karen Davis, Amanda Lenig and Sarah Shaffer this truly was a day that changed their lives. Each was presented with a $10,000 scholarship from the Jacksons. Mr. Jackson quotes, “… my wife and I want to give back and help students. Students who are working hard, who demonstrate potential, thriving at Susquehanna, and doing it all quietly – maybe flying below the radar screen like I did.”
Due to their academic successes, extracurricular activities and strong work ethic, Davis, Lenig and Shaffer ultimately rose to the top of a list that included more than 60 nominations. Below (left to right) Seniors Amanda Lenig, Karen Davis and Sarah Shaffer. These young women were unaware of the scholarships they were about to receive.

Another exciting moment of the day was the announcement of the University’s campaign kick-off with a fundraising goal of $70 million in new gifts to help with advances in academics, endowments, and building priorities. A high priority is a new, additional science building planned for the site of the current North parking lot.. Family Weekend
Families poured in from all over to visit their college students over the weekend of November 10-12. Families started arriving on Friday and had the chance to attend classes with their students. President Lemons hosted an open house on Pine Lawn to meet students, their families, administration, and faculty. Many other activities were available throughout the weekend including a showing of the movie “Click” at TRAX or attending the Fall musical Oklahoma! Saturday offered many presentations on topics related to the University. The big event was the Family Weekend football game. Kickoff was at 1:30 against Lycoming College. Susquehanna played a good game, but was eventually beat out by Lycoming 28-14. Family weekend ended on Sunday with a worship service and a final showing of Oklahoma!
Campus Concert: Better than Ezra and Josh Kelley
Better than Ezra and Josh Kelly performed at Weber Chapel on November 18, sponsored by Susquehanna’s SAC. Better than Ezra started in 1993 with their album “Deluxe” followed by six other albums, their latest being “Before the Robots.." The band is best known for its first hit “A Lifetime." The opening act for Better than Ezra was Josh Kelley; a soulful solo artist who self-produced its latest album.
The night was full of entertainment and relaxation for the students before diving into a busy Holiday and exam season.
Woodrow Wilson Fellow Speaks at SU

The 30th Annual Woodrow Wilson lecture brought Chinese Human Rights Activist Dimon Liu to Susquehanna on November 1 to speak on campus. The lecture “Are Universal Human Rights an Unrealistic Dream?” was held in Degenstein Theater and was open to the public.
Liu is originally from China and raised in United States. She has been involved with human rights for more than 30 years. She has been all over the world fighting for human rights, has spoken before the UN, was the lead debater at the Oxford Debating Society in 1992, and also spoke at the World Conference on Human Rights.
Her lecture was very intriguing, it was fascinating how hard she has fought for so many years. She will stop at nothing to have the same rights for all human beings throughout the world. Currently, Liu is working on a magazine to increase awareness of the importance of human rights. Liu lightened her lecture by concluding with several jokes, and is collecting as many jokes as she can to put into her magazine.
Fall Musical: OKLAHOMA !
This year, OKLAHOMA! was the place to be over Family Weekend.
Set in western Indian territory at the end of the 20 th century, the musical weaves a tale of high-spirited romance between a handsome cowboy and winsome farm girl. According to the Rodgers and Hammerstein Library, “the road to true love never runs smooth, with these two head-strong romantics at the reins.” And although their journey is “as bumpy as a surrey ride down a country road,” their success in making a life together in the brand new state of Oklahoma is never in doubt.
Oklahoma ! was the first fall musical to be presented by SU’s independent Department of Theatre. Prior to the fall semester, theatre and communications were combined in one department. Now each discipline has a department unto itself. The move brought Susquehanna in line with many of its peer schools, improving its ability to attract high-quality theatre students and encouraging discipline-focused curriculum development and prestige for the program.
I attended the play and enjoyed watching many of my friends have lead roles. I love musicals and it makes it even better when good friends are playing the lead roles.
