  • A Word from Sean

I’m baaaaaa-aaaccckkk! I am sure you were all wondering—anxiously waiting—to find out what happened to me and my January edition of the Pipeline. To be honest, I am not really sure. February 2nd was Groundhog’s Day and Puxatawney Phil crawled out from his hole, saw his shadow signaling six more weeks of winter, and then crawled back into his hole. Well, just a few days ago I crawled out from beneath the stack of books and papers that I was working on, saw my shadow and the large amount of scruff growing on my face, and decided that not only would there be six more weeks of winter, but that I needed to stop living and smelling like a groundhog—I needed a shave, a shower, and to sit down and send out a Pipeline.

Although Phil and I agree that it looks like we will have to wait another six weeks for a relief from the cold and snow, APAN is ready to roll through what promises to be another busy spring season, starting NOW! The Spring College Fair Season will be beginning shortly, and you should have received an e-mail with the patented APAN College Fair spreadsheet, inquiring about your interest in covering any fairs. We are excited to bring back the Adopt-A-Student program for its second year as well, and have just begun assigning accepted students to some members. We are also currently planning a number of accepted student receptions, and developing an APAN Interview Initiative! In other words, it is going to be--and already is--a busy spring season!

I hope you are all as excited as I am to get underway and to help bring in another record-setting, wonderful class to SU! Now as for me, unlike Phil, I cannot afford to just crawl back to my hole and hibernate. It is time to get to work!

    -Sean

APAN Members of the Month--This Section will Return in the Next Edition of the Pipeline

The APAN Member of the Month section highlights individual APAN members who have contributed significantly to the expansion and success of APAN over the past year.

SU Outstanding Performer of the Month

This month’s SU Outstanding performer is sophomore Anna Makatche. Makatche, a native of Leesport, PA, is a Spanish and French double major with a minor in Secondary Education. Besides being an outstanding student, she divides her time among countless activities and organizations, and is probably the busiest person on campus!

She is the Parliamentarian of Student Government Association and on the SGA executive committee, which means her numerous responsibilities include running all student government elections, helping students' groups through the process of forming clubs, and holding regular office hours in the SGA office. Makatche also serves as the Treasurer of Gospel Choir, of which she is a member, and the Treasurer of HOLA (Hispanic Organization for Latino-American Awareness). She is a representative to the Diversity Council, which promotes diversity on campus, and works both as a Spanish tutor and a Tour Guide for the Office of Admissions. As a result of her outstanding academic work she was selected to be a Presidential Fellow, one of only a few sophomores who meet with President Lemons and discuss literature with him. Finally, because she likes to keep active, she also is a member of the Women’s Rugby team that will be competing at Nationals this spring. She does not have much time to relax, but loves it at SU and may be the genuinely nicest, kindest person you will ever meet! Congratulations to Anna, and keep up the good work!

    Important Upcoming Admissions Events

All APAN members need to be aware of these upcoming Admissions deadlines and events. March 1st is the Regular Decision Application Deadline, a date that is just two weeks away! If you know any prospective students interested in applying to Susquehanna who have not yet done so or have not completed their application, please remind them of this deadline and urge them to send their applications in! Another important date to remember is Saturday, April 3rd, when the Office of Admissions will host the Accepted Students Open House. One of the most important steps in the college process is visiting top-choice schools, and the campus and university community can be the deciding factor for whether or not a student will enroll. Of course, we have a beautiful campus and wonderful community here at SU, so if any of your prospective students have been accepted, please encourage them to attend what promises to be a fun, informative day!

Crusader Campus Hot Spot: WQSU, The Pulse

It’s in the center of campus, at the heart of the Degenstein Campus Center, and at the heart of the Susquehanna students—it’s The Pulse, WQSU 88.9 FM, and it is this month’s Crusader Campus Hot Spot. The station, located on the lower level of the Degenstein Campus Center, is completely student run and, with 12,000 watts of power, is the third largest college radio station in Pennsylvania. The Pulse, which is officially a modern rock station, also has a variety of specialty shows which feature bluegrass, country, reggae and electronic music, in addition to airing Crusader athletic events. Students often hang out in the hallway outside of the radio station listening to music playing, and rely on the station to catch the action of Crusader football and basketball away games. Interested in what’s playing on The Pulse or want more information about the station? Check out The Pulse Web site by clicking here!

    Coming and Going on Campus

With the beginning of 2004 and the start of a new semester, there are a number of staff members at SU who are making new starts as well. Dr. Linda McMillin, Professor of History, has been named Provost and Dean of the Faculty. Lisa Baer, associate director of residence life, announced her resignation earlier this month, citing the need for a new challenge. Baer, who also served as an advisor to the Black Student Union and the Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity, is moving on to serve as assistant dean of students at Keuka College in NY. Her position will remain open until June.

Additionally, Tim Briggs, assistant football coach and head baseball coach, announced his resignation at the beginning of the month. Matt Karchner, a graduate of Bloomsburg University and a former major league player, has been named as the interim head baseball coach. Karchner, a former All-American, was a relief pitcher for six seasons with the Chicago White Sox and Chicago Cubs, and hopes to contend for a playoff spot this season.

We wish all the best of luck in their new positions!

    Hot Off the Presses!

-An exhibition titled “Impossible to Forget: The Nazi Camps Fifty Years After” opened in Susquehanna University’s Lore Degenstein Gallery on Saturday, January 24, at 7 p.m. Dr. Barbie Zelizer, Raymond Williams chair of communication at the University of Pennsylvania’s Annenberg School for Communication, spoke about the exhibition in Degenstein Center Theater. The exhibit is open through March 4, 2004.

-Susquehanna University's School of Natural and Social Sciences has added Ecology to the list of majors available to students.

-Susquehanna’s music and theatre arts departments will bring the popular comic opera, The Mikado, to the stage of Degenstein Center Theater Friday-Sunday, February 27-29. The fully-staged production with orchestra accompaniment will be held at 8 p.m. February 27, and 3 p.m. February 28-29. Performances are free and open to the public, but reserved seating is required. Tickets are available by calling the university box office at 570-372-ARTS (2787) between noon and 6 p.m. Monday-Friday .
