  • A Word from Sean

It is that time of year that every true sports fan has to appreciate: March Madness, three straight weeks of the most exciting, most competitive college basketball games that determine, by whittling the teams from 65 all the way down to 1, the national champion. I love the NCAA Tournament and can often be found glued to the television with a basketball in hand to help me deal with the excitement.

I have begun to realize, though, that there is a completely different type of March Madness that goes on at every college campus, and especially in every Office of Admissions, at this time of year. It is the end of March, meaning there is just about one month left before all the deposits of accepted students must be paid. Admissions Directors project numbers, anxiously anticipating the size and quality of the soon-to-be-determined freshman class. At the same time, every office is busy preparing for at least one, if not several, open houses. Prospective students must be registered, folders of information put together, paels put together, faculty mobilized, and the campus prepared for the crush of visitors who will descend on each college and university. It is an incredibly busy and stressful time of the year!

To help keep the "madness" down here at the SU Office of Admissions, I propose you help Chris Markle and the gang out: remind accepted students to register for and encourage them to attend the Accepted Student Open House, this Saturday, April 3rd. Additionally, make all other prospective high school students aware of the Junior Open House, Saturday, April 24th. Finally, May 1st is the Enrollment Deposit Deadline--encourage accepted students in their decisions and urge them not to wait until the last minute! Maybe with your help and support, we can limit the madness on this campus to the basketball games. (Somehow, though, I doubt it!)

    -Sean

March APAN Member of the Month

The APAN Member of the Month section highlights individual APAN members who have contributed significantly to the expansion and success of APAN over the past year.

The APAN Member of the Month for the month of March is Karli Grant. Karli, a 1992 graduate of SU and APAN member since 2002, is a very active participant and volunteers her time not only to work college nights, but also in the Adopt-A-Student and Adopt-A-School programs. Karli works a very busy schedule with the Datatel Software Corporation, and although unable to sit down for a detailed interview, we still appreciate all of her hard work and efforts! Congratulations, and thank you Karli!

SU Outstanding Performer of the Month

This month’s SU Outstanding Performer is sophomore Zach Wineland. Wineland, who hails from Hollidaysburg, PA is a Business Administration major with an emphasis in Marketing. A member of Alpha Lamda Delta, a national Freshman Honors society, Wineland maintains a stellar 3.85 GPA and has been selected for the Dean's List every semester so far at SU! In addition to his talent and hard work in the classroom, he also finds time to serve on the Student Judicial Board, which reviews student conduct issues, play QB for his Intramural Football team, and participate as an active member in the SU Republican's Club.

In addition, Wineland has been selected to participate in the Sigmund Weis School of Business study abroad program in London. The program, offered to highest achieving business majors, is one of the most popular study abroad programs that SU students choose to participate in. The program is particularly important because it offers courses in European Business, which is necessary as globalization continues to grow.

Wineland, who hopes to one day work in either sports management or marketing within the automotive industry, will intern this summer with the New Pig Corporation & Industrial Product Clean-Up Agency, which works with both government and private firms. Of the Sigmund Weis School of Business, Wineland says, "It provides a sound core that allows you to have a strong base in all aspects of business." He especially appreciates the professors here at SU, because in his experiences he considers them, "knowledgeable, always available, and always open to discussion and new ideas."

Congratulations Zach, and keep up the great work!

    Jim Taylor to Retire

Jim Taylor, the Men’s Track and Field coach at SU, has announced that he will retire at the end of the 2004 season, ending an illustrious 26-year tenure with the University. Taylor first came to SU in 1979 after 16 seasons coaching at Selinsgrove Area High School, where he had great success in directing the Seals to five district championships and the 1976 PIAA State Championship. He inherited a struggling program at SU but within one year turned the program around, and from 1980 to 1990 won 71 consecutive dual meets. Taylor’s numbers are impressive: a 117-14 career dual meet record, 11 MAC titles (including last year), 32 All Americans, and 7 National Champions. Taylor was also instrumental in the formation of the Women's Track and Field team in 1989. Taylor, whose contribution to the University and Selinsgrove-Area community is immeasurable, throughout his career has stressed the importance of winning and losing with class and respect, and his motto, “It’s a Great Day to Get Better!” hangs in the SU fieldhouse.

SU Virtual Tour Receives 4-Star Award

The new SU virtual tour, featured on the Office of Admissions Web site, has received the Four-Star Virtual Tour Award from the prominent university and college Web site www.campustours.com. The Four-Star award, given to one deserving virtual tour per month, was awarded for a tour that, "...provides a straightforward overview of the university's academic atmosphere, student life and recreational opportunities... Susquehanna University's elegant virtual tour entices students with a good mix of academics, student life and extracurricular activities. The CampusTours Awards Committee found this to be an excellent online excursion..." Spring Concert '04: Fuel and Breaking Benjamin

The Student Activities Committee has announced that the spring concert for this year will feature Fuel and Breaking Benjamin. Fuel is perhaps one of the most prominent bands in modern rock today, first forming in Harrisburg and earning local recognition in 1997, at which point they were signed by Epic Records. Sunburn, their first album released in 1998, went multi-platinum, and they followed that success with another multi-platinum album, Something Like Human, which also featured their first number one single, "Hemorrhage (In My Hands)." They are currently promoting their third album, Natural Selection. Breaking Benjamin is also a local band, from Wilkes-Barre, and is promoting their first album, Saturate. Among other members, the band features Aaron Fincke, son of SU English professor Gary Fincke.

Crusader Campus Hot Spot: Rock N' Bowl

One of the greatest challenges for students in college is in making their money last from month to month, and honestly, most aren’t that good at it, meaning they have to find cheap, inexpensive ways to have fun. Perhaps one of the best is Rock N’ Bowl at the Selinsgrove Lanes, less than five minutes from campus, and also in Sunbury, just fifteen minutes from campus. Everyone loves bowling, right? Well, add in a DJ playing rock and hip-hop music, dimmed lights, and disco balls swinging, and you have yourself a great time for $5-$10! Many SU students take advantage of the good time and can be found there bowling, rocking, and dancing during the week or on Friday nights!

    Hot Off the Presses!

    - Saturday, April 17 SU will host a Lutheran Youth Day for students in grades 6-12. Theme: “Worst Case Scenario! – How Jesus Makes a Difference When Things Really Go Bad.” Registration: 9 a.m.; Opening Session: 10 a.m., Stretansky Hall. Cost: $10 per person includes lunch and a concert by Dakota Road! For more information, call 570-372-4303.

-Susquehanna University's School of Natural and Social Sciences has added Ecology to the list of majors available to students.
